How do i copy or read files off another Hard drive?

Problem got a broken netbook with a black screen on boot up. Tried everything and i cant get it to work. I have taken out the hard drive, put it into an external HD caddy to run on my main rig. Computer recognises Hd, can show me the files on it, but OS (Vista) says i dont have permission to read the files on it. I am running the computer as an admin.

Any help will be greatly appreciated on how i can copy and read the files, music and pictures the external hard drive.

In my experience this is a good time to have a bootable Linux distro to hand. Something like SuSE, Ubuntu etc should recognise the files & allow you to copy them.

Please expand, do i run linux on my current rig to do this? Dual booting is a new thing to me.

You just need to ake ownerhsip of the folders. In fact just take ownership from the root. You will then be able to copy, move, delete, do whatever you like

What was the OS on the Netbook? And did you have any form of encryption running, like Windows EFS? It's easy to turn that on and forget it's enabled, and if so, you've a bit more of a headache if you don't have the encryption keys backed up. Taking "ownership" shouldn't work it that situation but there's certainly enough reports out there that it does. If not, you might need something break the encryption. I've heard reports of some software that'll do that, and is supposed to be both good and legitimate (as in both legal and from an apparently reputable source) but haven't used it myself, so it's just what I've been told. The os on the Netbook is XP, while my main rig is vista. When trying to view folders, It tells me i need admin access, even though i am running as admin. Thanks for all your help, will try out all the advice given.

You can run Ubuntu on your computer without installing it. Just burn an Ubuntu ISO to a CD, pop it in your system and it should boot up Ubuntu 'live', without having to install it or anything.
You hard drive should be accesible from here (this is what I always do).
