4 pin USB ok for motherboard USB header?

Hi

Hope someone can help me, I've just ordered one of these aerocool coolpanel 3's from scan.

The memory card reader has a sort of flat 4 pin plug on it a bit similar to this just with 4 not 5 pins.

Do I plug this cable straight into the 9 pin header on the motherboard? Or do I need an adapter???

Sorry if this is a noob question, never seen these cables before!

plug it straight on, no adapter required.

Unfortuneately the card reader still isn't working.
As it doesn't come with any install instructions at all, I'm at a loss of things to try. I've tried plugging the cable in different ways and windows never registers it and it never shows up in Asus Express gate.

Not sure what else to try before calling scan!

Cable looks to be wired right, assuming the markings on the plastic match the wires in it.

Does it work outside ExpressGate?

Nope, tried in Ubuntu too. None of them see it. Windows doesn't even bring up the detected new hardware thing.

I dont think theres any power going to it at all. I have a broken MicroSD card the heats up as soon as it goes near a reader and that didn't get warm in there. Should I presume the reader is broken??

hmm, youve connected all the required cables?

does the unit do anything at all? or is it just the card slots that dont work?

Have you got anything that you can plug into the board header to make sure that it's not shagged?

Surely it cannot just run off one header like that, as it'd only supply connection to one USB port and that front panel has 2 USB ports and the card reader ports. :

It actually has two usb cables, one 9 pin for the two usb slots and one 4 pin for the reader. The two usb slots work fine.

The headers on the board are deffinently ok as I use them for my cases USBs, I've ordered a USB PCI card to add the extra header for the card reader, but I used the board headers to test as I know they work.

Other cables are a sata cable for the esata (not interested in this as my case already has one), and audio cable for the headphone microphone sockets, a cable that splits into three with the temp sensors on and a cable that splits with the fan powers on as well as a 4 pin molex cable which gives the unit power (took me ages to realise thats what it was for!).

So I have everything connected barring the sata cable.

From my understanding these front panels are not very complicated basics are that the usb headers are wired to the ports and the card reader would just be a separate connection to that.

It sounds like the card reader is dead.

You always take a chance testing broken hardware by putting it into known good gear, I had a slot load DVD drive that died and took the IDE port on the motherboard with it, I thort it was just the port that died but when I put the DVD drive on another Motherboard it killed a second port...

Well I've just had a new usb pci card delivered with an internal usb header on it. I've installed that fine. I've plugged in the memory card reader and Windows found something when it restarted, but now theres just an extry in device manager saving unknown device. I've downloaded the drivers from the website but its still not working!

Think I might give scan a call...!
