No ideq but they forgot to mention the dangers of trying to move one or the impact on cheap office furniture!

I am sure that TFT displays also add to most of those points to some degree; its usually all relative.

If one happens to fall on you that could be fairly dangerous.

    Re: dangers of CRT monitors

    Hmmmmm.

CRT monitors do give off EM radiation. And EM radiation is sufficient doses certainly isn't good for you. And some of the symptoms they describe can be caused by prolonged use of a CRT monitor.

BUT, those same symptoms can also be caused by prolonged use of a TFT monitor. Or by sitting in the same position for a long time. Or by spending a long period of time around a flickering light source. Or, in short, by working in an office.

OMFG OFFICE WORK IS TEH DANGERS!!!! EVERYONE STOP WURKINS NAAAOOOW!

    Re: dangers of CRT monitors

Isnt the headace one only if you have the refresh rate less than 75Hz, I use to get them on CRT's at ~60Hz, but turning it up allways helped.

Yes. Well the eye risks can be reduced by increasing the refresh rate and decreasing brightness. But there's still the X-rays to contend with, but it's scattered and a very low dose, and low energy. Anyway, bit late to panic about it now. CRT tech is dead. And TFT doesn't have the same risks attached to them.

    Re: dangers of CRT monitors

CRT tech does emit x-rays. But the manufacturers are aware of this. The glass is thick and leaded to absorb the x-rays (and survive the pressure of the atmosphere of course). I've never seen any compelling evidence that the radiation from CRT does any harm, or even has any noticable affect.

As others have said, using a badly adjusted monitor, ragardless of if it is CRT or an LCD, will cause minor health issues, like headaches. Obviously LCD doesn't have issues with flicker that badly adjusted CRTs do, which most people can't see but still finds it causes headache or feeling sick etc.
Anyone that uses DSE should already know about taking breaks and ensuring the break allows your eyes to change focus etc.

I, personally am not convinced that using a PC monitor is going to cause "cataracts, retina damage, eye cancer". What does everyone else think? Does anyone know for sure that this isn't the case?

    Re: dangers of CRT monitors

Just to chime in here, the statement:
    1. Prolonged use of CRT cause nausea, vomiting, headache and confusion.
Sounds like the only legit symptoms you may get from using a CRT Monitor, and that's caused by a too lower refresh rate.

The default lowest refresh rate that CRT Monitors used to go was about 60Hz, for a lot of people that caused eye-strain and could cause similar symptoms to them listed above.

But the refresh rate debate was entirely personal, some people would find 60Hz fine; I would personally get headaches and such from using anything below 75Hz.

My CRT use to make me eyes feel tired and that was a 75Hz screen. What I hated the most
was if I was using one at uni in a room lit with strip lighting, I use to find it hard to concentrate on something difficult.

    Re: dangers of CRT monitors

There is one other issue with CRTs that gets overlooked - phosphor decay. Drag a white cursor over a pure black screen and you'll see many trails. Watch any dark video and the lighter parts will show an after image. When gaming, small lights will appear to streak across the screen. I understand as a monitor ages this problem gets progressively worse? I've just had to make the switch from a Sony FW900 to LCD, as the long decay time was causing eye-strain and headaches.
