Did you check your boot floppy on the Dell system? Or switch the floppy drive.

Your HDDs with Linux OS etc loaded may not boot very well on another mobo whether the mobo is borked or not.

Maybe try Memtest from a floppy with no HDD connected and see if it will run that.

have you tried booting from the XP cd and reloading windows?

also have you tried a different ide cable
    Yes and yes.

System hangs when windows tries to load from the CD
Tried new IDE cables (4 in fact).

can you try some different ram (different size and brand)?
    Tried. Same problem.

The only thing left IMHO is the mobo.
Anyway, I've got an RMA number from Ebuyer so it's going back.

Yo got an RMA no from Ebuyer?!? I had a faulty maxtor drive and had to return it to maxtor because all I got was 'please try the diagnostics program and tell us the code' when the drive was a dead as a dead thing! However, they have been good otherwise, if a litle expensive.

I've never had any probs with RMA-ing EBuyer.
HDD's are a little different cos you have these diagnostic problems ( as you mention) that can fix things before you RMA it.

oh,yes. I RMA-ed the mobo and got a new one a couple of days later.
Worked perfectly, so it was definitely the mobo.
