Question A dual channel memory question

    Hi there,

I have one stick of 512mb ram and have just got another 2x 256 sticks of ram. All 3 are of the same type, Mushkin lv 2 pc3200 bh5. Just wondering what configuration i should put them in my mobo, the abit nf7-s?. Also is it possible to run the 2x 256 sticks in dual channel config (with the 512 in the spare slot)? Searched round the net and found conflicting info

    Thanks for your help

Yeah, you just want the 512 stick on the slot that's on its own, and the 2x256 in the two slots that are close to each other. Job's a good 'un.

What speed are you running them at BTW? In theory 3 DIMMS at PC3200 is supposed to be hard for a motherboard to do, but if two of them are single sided i guess it works.

    Depends on the motherboard

The gigabyte one for example, i belive is certified to use all 4 DIMMs at 400mhz

this is the right way, well for me anyway lol.
It comes up in bios and tests as dual channel.
As for the 3 dimms thingy..if i take my 512mb stick out and bench the difference was small.Sometimes the 2x256mb would score higher. The next time it would be higher with all 3 in.

There are limitations on the 7NNXP though - if you want to populate all 4 slots then 3 & 4 can only take single sided RAM.

I have a NF7-s V2.0 and if you do a bios update to one of the latest ones, you get some text at the beginning of the POST, right before all the cd drives and floppy and hd dectection it says in big bold white letter "DUAL DDR ENABLED" if you have dual ddr ram

NF7-S V2.0, Corsair 768 XMS 3200(512 Dual DDR), AMD Athlon XP 2400+, PowerColour 9600SE 128MB, Audigy 2, PlexWriter Premium (52X Write), Jet7 and a Chieftec Dragon with funky blue cold cathodes

There is no such thing as "dual DDR RAM"
Provided the memory is stuck on 2 different memory controllers, it will be in dual chan. mode

what the hell, i had a stick of 256 corsair and i wanted to get another and i asked aorund to see if it would run dual channel and everyone goes you have to buy them as a pair becuase 1 stick is channel A and the other channel B thats why they work as a pair, coz you normally buy sticks as A and ive you bought 2 seperatly they would conflict. so i bought a pair of www.overclockers.co.uk, well that sux if i knew i didn't have to buy them as a pair for them to run dual channel
