    AMD64 CPU's, MANY questions!

Firstly, can someone give me a list of the S939 CPUs and speeds, and any other differences.

THEN, I want to find out how well they overclock, as I will be overclocking, it affects my choice of which cpu, a lot.

IIRC, there are now two cores, the Newcastle (130nm) and the Winchester (90nm). I expect the winchesters overclock a lot more?

Now the memory controler now on the cpu die, how does that affect overclocking, what memory will I need?
Currently I have 2x512mb doublesided BH-5 capable of 230mhz at 7-2-2-2, or more, as its limited by my nf7-s.

How does it affect mobos since the athloonXP designs, what voltages do the AMD64 cpus run at, and what range do the mobos give without voltage mods?

Similarly now that the mem controler is on-die, how is memory overclocking affected, whats the max Vdimm voltage that can be used without burning up the controler?

What about PCI and AGP locks, or PCI-EX locks? if they need any...

Finally, which northbridge chipsets should I be looking out for, so far its just the nforce4 as I will be wanting PCI-EX for a nice shiny new gfx card....
Will via (not htat I wil ever buy a via based mobo EVER again) be making a pci-ex mobo for s939?

    Have I missed anything?

    nicked from another forum:

Clawhammer = 1MB cache 130nm process older, generally overclocks only to ~2200-2300 range on air
Newcastle = 512k cache 130nm process generally overclocks to 2400-2550 range on air
Winchester = 90nm Newcastle (for the most part anyway) lower power consumption and overclocks to 2500-2600 MHz range on air

Winchesters perform slightly better (like 1% not a big difference) than an equivalent clocked Newcastle

Socket 754 = single channel memory
Socket 939 = dual channel memory

Dual channel memory is significantly better in some situations (5% or so) and almost negligible in others Average is 2-3% performance boost for dual channel. Actually the extra cache is that way too, except usually negligible.

For the most part, You should be looking at Newcastle for S754 (budget system) or Winchester on S939 (higher end) since they don't make S754 Winchesters. For most gamers, S754 with an overclocked 2800+ is more than enough CPU power.

This is a summary of Desktop A64 only.

    1. Desktop A64 939 (90 nm) Smallest AMD die.
These CPU's feature dual memory controller adding 1-5% in performance over skt754 newcastle chips.
Run cooler than 130nm counterparts and have subble core enhancements adding 1-2% in performance over 130nm.

    Three models all winchesters
    3000+: 1.8GHz, x9 Winchester
    3200+: 2.0 GHz, x10 Winchester
    3500+: 2.2 GHz, x11 Winchester

    2. Desktop A64 939 (130 nm)

new Clawhammers will do 2.6-2.7GHz on air (my 3700+ does).

Overclocking AMD64s is a whole different world from an Athlon XP.

    Another AMD64 overclocking guide http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...hlight=kv8+pro

    interesting article on overclocking Winchester.

BH-5 should be fine if you can find a board that will give you ~3.1V (interestingly it doesn't seem to need quite as much voltage on AMD64).

Newcastle default voltage is 1.5V, Winchester 1.4V iirc.

VIA have a PCI-E chipset for AMD64 but whether it is shipping in volume yet ... ABIT have a board on their site AX8.
