    asus A8V rev2 dual channel ram

    Hi guys,

    I was installing my new motherboard last night and I read an interesting comment in the manual.

    It basicly said that you could fill up all four memory slots with ram and as long as it was paired ram, all four slots would run as dual channel

    eg:

    ---> channel 1
    ---> channel 2
    ---> channel 1
    ---> channel 2

    as was under the impression that only one bank of slots could be used as dual channel as as soon as you put in another 2 simms it would loose dual channel functionality

    I'm using an AMD 64 cpu - so that should mean the memory controller is on the chip - incase that makes any difference.

    Comments/experiences with this ?

    It is Inevitable.....

    Hiya

    Right. I have a NIGHTMARE with my Asus board when I got it as my CPU super-air-cooler wouldn't fit with my Twin XMS Pro memory and so I spent time finding out what slot I could put memory in etc.

    Bank A1 & A2 (or slot 1 and 3) are your primary dual-channel slots.
    Bank B1 & B2 (or slot 2 and 4) will only run as dual-channel if you have memory in the slots above running as dual-channel.

    Basically, if you look in the memory config section, you will see what Asus recommend. In theory, you can use Banks B1 and B2 on their own as dual-channel and on some boards they will run as DC and on some they won't. Asus says it won't happen - half of the Hexus users who tried it says they do.

    So - fill all 4 slots with matched pairs of memory and you will be fine for dual-channel.

    Final comments? You shouldn't really need more than a gig anyway unless you are doing video encoding etc, so why not get yourself 2 x 512MB matched pair and bung em in banks A1 and A2 and not worry about it.
