POST codes
I have a dell 8100 that has a problem, nothign comes up on screen when it starts, nothing, tryed different monitors and cables, reseated all but the cpu.
I think it would help if i could tell if there was a post error but there are no post leds and i hear no bleeps (it has a pci sound card though?) when speakers are pluged in. Do i need to get a PCI post card like one of these? or what? http://www.cfide.co.uk/pci_post_display_card.shtml thanks |

The speaker for the motherboard is normally either onboard, or on the case - you can make sure that you've connected the case speaker correctly to the motherboard.
Other than that, the only way I could work out the problem would be trial and error.

I seem to have the same problem - I was using the computer yesterday with no problem, come to start it up today, fans etc going, hard drive appears to whizz round, but nothing on screen. I don't think it's a graphics card problem cos it doesn't seem to be going through the normal boot sequence, and the optical drives aren't spinning up, which they usually do when Windows is booting.
Anyone any ideas? Sorry to hijack, but I thought two threads with the same issue may annoy people... |

Nothing new in the case, updated the Via drivers yesterday, but it worked after a re-boot.
I've taken it to a shop now anyway, they'll diagnose for £20, which is a fair price and better than me flapping about for hours without a clue... |

Are these POST cards generic? Can they work with any motherboard?
I had a friend offloada pc to me. I managed to get it to work and installed windows. However, I was going to transplant it to my HTPC case. In so doing, I couldn't get it to work. The motherboard powers up (powers CPU cooler, chassis fan), so does the HDD. I checked the AGP graphics work by testing in my other machine. However it does not post. During testing I also managed to fry the CPU! Ordered a Duron 1800 to replace the Athlon 1600 but still no joy. Just had Scan deliver a cheapo motherboard to test out. |

Did you drop anything remotely conductive on the motherboard while working on the fan? Thats what i did, bridged something that shouldn' t have been - dead. completely dead
But by the sounds of it something has come unseated. Have you tried the RAM ? thats the most common one in my experience.Dave |

Ill check the ram but its rambus and so i cant try one dimm and it has to use the spacers in the empty slots so there is no checking for faulty ram modules.
