i wish id bought single core now, dual core gaming:(

    hi there

i posted around a week ago now iwas so exited about getting my new sn95gv3 and san diego64 3700+ oh and my 2gig of corsair, then i went and bought a dual core athlon64 4400+ at the very last minute got my machine all up and running and shes absolutely great except every other game ive installed (other than: act of war ht which works flawlessly!!!) is failing miserably, where as i can leave the machine benching for a full night with 3dmark 2001,2003 and come back to it still barely breaking a sweat and quite happily running like it was when i left it.

upon further searching the web for info i discovered that most people have had issues with dual core and gaming at some point till they found away around it except most ofit requires registry work or the like which im not realy intrested in messing with (i just wana install and game like im used to) and dont wana have to disable one of my cores to do it otherwise wots the point in dual cores for gaming until games are made to take advantage of them
ive downloaded the amd dual core driver for xp sp2 but this hasnt solved any issues,,can any1 gime any advice as to wot im to do here other than running out to buy me a single core again which i realy want to avoid??

athlon dual cores av been around a short while now surely theres a simple driver or piece of software that can let me play like i always did,,this is my best machine ever and was built purely as a gaming rig except i cant game.

all my drivers are upto date that i can think of,,theres no issues that would convince me its driver related, the machine rox and is stable as ide expect till it comes to gaming then iget issues where it just freezez and i have to hard reset my shuttle,,please some one put me outa my misery.

    mic.

Registry work? nope, Just Ctrl Alt Del go to processes tab, and set the affinity of the process to one of the cores. It will then use that core in future, no confusion etc, jus makes it work like a single core machine with no load from windows

Boot your pc and set all the processes to one core, so windows and antivirus are running on one core which leaves one core free. However how do you make everything else run on the free core?

Argh dual core is utter ****e atm, good if you're multi tasking but still.... I would really like to find a way of auto setting programs to run on one core without me having to load it up or changing it in CTRL+ALT+DEL, in other words my computer boots with the programs affinity at 0 without any user intervene or any program of some kind... But atm all you can do is use affinity set to 1 core in games...

I don't understand. I've had two dual core CPU's (of my own). Never had a problem at all.

Just let the task manager sort the affinity out for you - you'll be fine

Thats great, except programs such as steam just fall over on dual core systems for some reason or other, and I suspect its not the only one to do so.

dunno then, on a friends machine neither it nor cs would run unless he manually set the affinity

Yeah CSS crashing is a good indication of unstable RAM

Many games played here and the only one I have ever had issues with is the original Unreal Tournament.

No worries here either - if you want to set processor affinity then why not visit Mike Lin's wonderful page:

    http://www.mlin.net/SMPSeesaw.shtml

With more games and drivers being written with dual core in mind you certainly shouldn't see any performance drop at same clocks...

Update your BIOS then, b/c I just got a Dual X2 4200+ with an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium that came with BIOS version 1016 and it works fine. Steam too. I don't know what your machine's problem is.

ImageCFG may come in handy if you're finding constantly pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del to be a pain in the arse.
