Where to put a thermal cpu probe?

I've just got hold of a fan controller that has a couple of thermal probes.
Presumably one should go on or near the cpu,but where exactly do you put it?

I guess that you can't put it between the cpu die and HS ,cos it will then interfere with heat disipation.

Can anyone help me with this?
Also,where do you reccommend you put the other probe if,say, you want to measure the case temp?

tried this with an AMD cpu and the computer wouldn't boot.I think hte wires feom the probe stopped the cpu pins from interfacing with the motherboard.

I might try it on the top of the cpu and not the underside.

Definately put the probe just touching the die which is on top of the package. It's not accurate puting it underneath as it's not touching the cpu core/die.

I just had to do this for an Athlon XP 2500+ and a Volcano 11+.

I followed the instructions the HSF came with and put it underneath the CPU. You have to angle it as in the above picture, and then the thin wires run between the pins. I've not had a problem booting the computer. I am though having some CPU temp issues.

Perhaps I should change the location? But then, the temp readings are from the BIOS, not the HSF.

I think the wires that went to the heat probe on my cpu were too thick to allow the pins on the cpu to insert properly.

I think I will try to put the probe next to, just touching the die, on the top of the cpu, as pillowcat says.
Also, the 2nd picture in the web site link above, shows this method quite well.
