Here is what not to do with Chillis. Do not spend 5-10min handling/preparing them for your curry or chilli, chutney or what not and then immediately go to the toilet (if you are male)... that is a burning sensation you do not want.
Sensible addition to the comment above, stick the jars in a pressure cooker that is the closest you will get to having an autoclave at home. The pressure and heat will kill 99% of any microorganisms that may have made their way into your jars. Pressure cookers are pretty cheap or a relative might have a battered old one, just set them going for 8-12 hours.
