main difference between a porter and a stout is that if you hold a porter up to a strong light you'll see the reddish notes.

Interesting - 'cos when I went round the Guinness brewery tour in Dublin (good fun, but not really genuine) they explained (at length) that Guinness is not black, but dark Ruby red, and if you hold it to the light it is a tad rouge. (But admittedly, Porter is more red and less black, so your point stands)

They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

if ayone visits that page, and they should...

MacLir is the finest beer in the world. Period.

It's a wheat beer and it's light, sharp and stunning. Nothing like porter though, which I do like a lot

Funny you should say that, cos the malt is roasted over a peat fire (allegedly)

    Re: Porter

This isn't quite a porter but if you're into them you should try an ale called Dark Island.

I've only seen it in Scotland (The Ensign Ewarts opposite the Hub at the top-end of the Royal Mile, Edinburgh) and at a beer-festival here (Halfway House, Brenchley, Kent) on tap, but I'm sure you'd be able to find it bottled somewhere.
