People round for dinner tomorrow, can't find a vital ingredient of my Thai extravaganza anywhere... well, Tesco's and Asda don't have it anyway. Where can I find Peanut Oil?? Failing that, can anybody assure me that vegetable oil or sesame oil will make a good substitute? Cheers in advance...! |

Use veg oil instead. Peanut oil is used for a base and sesame would be too overpowering. Its strange that you couldn't find it in the supermarket. A chinese supermarket will have it.

Bear in mind that peanut oil is often called groundnut oil in supermarkets. Failing that, a light vegetable oil is your best bet. It won't make <too> much difference to the flavour either way.

Peanut (Groundnut) oil has the advantages of a very neutral flavour and a high smokepoint - so you can get it really hot compared to the veg/olive oil.
I've stir-fried with olive oil before now, and it didn't clash with the other flavours. |

Well thanks for the help guys, went with the vegetable oil in the end...
Starters (Pork & Pineapple satay kebabs) was lovely.... Main meal, which required peanut oil, (Beef & Aubergine Thai Red Curry) was bloody awful. Didn't taste bad or anything, but it just didn't have any of the lovely tastes I was expecting... just... bland! Note to self.. when people coming round for dinner, cook something you KNOW is nice..! But you'll like this pudding recipe, so simple, and so nice! Put in saucepan: Pint of coconut milk, 3/4 cup brown sugar, couple pinch of salt. Bring to boil. Add three bananas sliced in half then legthways. Bring back to boil, simmer for a few mins. Serve! Quick, easy, actually tasted quite MMMmmmm... |
