yellow label specials
if you live near a supermarket - I can usualyl get a realy nice meal for two people less than the price of a pint.Example tonights YLS delight is some extra lean 'finest' beef strips with some stirfry veg and noodles. Total cost under £3 and will feed two hungry folk. ( and thats an expensive meal - I normally try to budget it for £2.50 per meal ) loads of fresh veggies too - and it needn't take an age to prepare either. |

Simple fish curry
http://www.onlinecookerybook.co.uk/i...p?articleid=56 Use cheap Tesco blue stripe (or similar) frozen fish fillets. Work a treat. Forget spices & use a tin of Pataks curry paste. |

real cheapie
baked spud (20p, just get the biggest spud you can find, or get a bag of 4 for 80p-£1) tin of tuna (35p, the cheapest you can get..) some mayo (35p/jar, should do 5 or 6 meals) some sweetcorn (30p/tin, will do 3 meals) spike spud with fork, wrap in kitchen towel, bung on a plate and microwave for 7 mins. add tuna (drained), 3 spoons (big spoons) of mayo and 1/3 tin of sweetcorn to a bowl of some sort (breakfast bowl will do fine), mix well with a fork. wait for spud, when it comes out. if firm on the outside, put a knife all the way thru it - if its soft in the middle (you can tell by how easy the knife is to push in) you've overdone it a bit, take out, add to food and eat. if not bung in for another 3 mins. ideally spud should be fairly soft on the outside.. if you want to crispen it up, bung it in the oven for 10 mins after its done.. add all to plate, munch. be merry. spend the other £1 on a couple of tins of beer

Bolognese sauce (serve with pasta of your choice obviously).
1 pack of minced beef (400g is plenty for two people). My wife insists on the lean stuff but if I had my way I'd use the cheap fatty stuff, fat = good IMO . Cost = 65p (fatty), £1.29 (lean, if you buy it in Lidl).1-2 oxo cubes depending on how 'beefy' you like the taste 1 onion (onions last ages, so cheapest way is to buy a 5kg bag for £1 from an 'ethnic' local store, all the ones near me do them). 1 tin of chopped tomatoes (17p from Lidl or Tescos) 1 squeeze of tomato puree (about 25p a tube which lasts 4-5 meals). Splash of red wine to taste (only if you've got a bottle open though, obviously). Maybe a bit of basil/oregano to taste (dried will do). Finely chop the onions and fry them off for a bit in a large frying pan or wok (either will work fine, I can't taste the difference). When they've softened a bit add the mince and cook it until it's all browned. Add your oxo (if you want it), then add the chopped tomatoes, stir, and then stir in tomato puree until it's as tomatoey as you want it. Add a bit of wine if you have it, then simply leave it to simmer for half an hour, stirring every 10 minutes or so. Serve on pasta with a bit of grated cheese- ideally parmesan, which isn't stupidly pricey if you buy it from Lidl or Aldi, but cheddar tastes fine. Chilli Con Carne is basically the exact same recipe except that you add a can of kidney beans after you've added the tomatoes, then add 1-3 spoonfuls of chilli powder to spice it up. Chilli can be served on rice, baked potatoes or (my favourite) potato wedges. |

Bacon & Egg Fried Rice
Ingredients
2 tbsp vegetable oil 2 egg, beaten 75g Bacon, unsmoked, chopped into 2cm pieces 250g rice, cooked, left over rice from the day before is perfect 50g peas, cooked 1 tbsp light soy sauce 0.5 tsp ground black pepper Method 1. Heat a wok with one tablespoon of the oil over a moderate heat, and pour in the beaten eggs. Tip the pan around so that the eggs set in a thin layer - much like a pancake. When cooked, transfer the omelette to a chopping board and cut into small pieces – about 2cm squares. 2. In the same wok, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and fry the bacon until crisp. Tip in the cooked rice, followed by the peas and omelette pieces, and heat through. Season with soy sauce and a pinch of black pepper before serving. |

A few of my favourite quick ones:
Lemon and pepper chicken + accomp. take a chicken breaks wash and dry it, and then spike the top with a sharp knife. Take a lemon and sqeeze the juice into the small holes you just made, and then rub in some pepper. if you want you can also do this by slicing the chicken in half and putting them in there but i prefer on top. Then wrap it in foil so that it looks like a cornish pasty, and pop it in the oven for 15-20mins. You get beautiful tender chicken that is so soft from cooking in its own juices If you want to mix it up a bit try slicing it open and putting in some ham and cheese, gorgeous. To go wtih it add your fav side dish, I like doing it with oven chips and beans, but egg fried rice works well too, or noodles.I do home made burgers too but slightly differently to the above. 500g mince plopped in a bowl and mixed with your hands. Then squeeze in a large amount of heinz (important) tomato sauce and mix again. Then add in some salt, pepper, and ground basil to taste. Finaly step is approx half an egg (white + yolk) to help keep the burgers together. I think separate them into pates and cover in flour. Technically you should now put them in the fridge for a few hours but i tend to just stick them in the freezer for 5 mins to help firm them up. For cooking them - I tend to lightly fry them, but they sometimes fall apart so the easiest way is under the grill for 10mins a side. Stick between 2 pieces of bread, add chips and beans and your sorted

I call htis dish "I have no food..."
Find some carbohydratey thing...pasta or rice... If using pasta, dont cook it enough because you are hungry and cant be bothered to wait. If using rice, do it just when someone rings the door bell and leave it boil all the water away so you end up with sticky muck... Get any veg ior whatever (I had a red pepper...) Cut up and peel and through in frying pan. Get bacon or ham or similar, cut up and throw in as well. Mix it all togther and tip onto plate. Decided some cheese would be nice...cut off some stupid shaped chunks and put under grill (or if thats too much effort in microwave for a couple of minutes). Take to TV. Eat.
