How do you make a jacket potato?

No, it's not a windup! I bought three large King Edwards from Sainsburys. How do I make a jacket potato in the oven or a microwave?

I've got the filling for it but I have no idea how to make it hot! I am a total bell-end when it comes to cooking. I know that I have to prick it and that's the total sum of my knowledge.

Stick a couple of holes in the skin with a fork, stick it in the microwave. Get to the Jacket Potato Setting, select how many spuds you have and then press go.

Well, how I do it anyway.

    most m-waves dont have that

i'd say 6-10 mins for 1, 8-12 mins for 2, etc.. basically, do it for 6 then give it a squeeze, if its soft on the outside, stick a sharp knife in, if its soft all the way thru, then its done! if you overcook it, it'll go hard on the outside, and soft in the middle. still edible, but i'd avoid the stuff on the outside.

if you want it crispy, stick it in the oven for 20-30mins after its been in the m-wave.. gives the skin a nice crunch

You **MUST** do it in the oven. Soggy jacket potatoes are miserable things.

You can reduce the oven time by micromaving it for a few minutes, but for that crunchy-skin goodness put it in a hot oven for at least 1/2 hour.

I'll do it in the oven. Do I need to wrap it in foil and/or coat it with butter/oil?

I've got an electric fan assisted oven. What temperature should I set it to and how long would one potato take?

whack it in the over (stab it with knife/fork - otherwise you'll need to clean out your oven ) - microwave is good in a hurry but trust me, slam it in the oven for about 30 mins- or until it goes nice and crispy. Just before its cooked slam some butter in there and let it soak in whilst it finished cooking. Once done garnish with filling of your choice
Chilli is a particular fav - wash down with an ice cold beer

takes 2-3 hours in the oven.. after 2 hours any longer just gives you more crispyness in the skin. you need to sjewer it first, otherwise its fine.

i do agree it does have to have a filling - but if its created well enough with a nice crispy skin.....butter would suffice

Taz.. happy cooking - let us know how it goes
