Tinned Potatoes
Any suggestions for making tin potatoes (ones without skin) a bit more tastier?
I normally cook fresh potatoes, but during the week I'm sometimes in a rush so just bang on tinned ones. They are so bland!

You could turn them in to bombay potatoes.
http://www.recipes4us.co.uk/Indian%2...ht__indian.htm You should be able to shorten the cooking time using a microwave to cook the spuds.

I hate tinned potatoes, generally i think they are a pathetic excuse for food. But that said, it can be handy to have some stored for a fall back on a rainy day when you find the proper potatoes have sprouted and walked off.
The only things they are good for IMO is slicing and frying or mash, and thats only when im camping. Maybe a stew too. |

wow never realised you could get tinned ones lol, the whole idea of tinned vegetables just seems retarded to me...but oh well...
what to do with them? potato cakes? Mash them up with a lump of butter, add some salt/pepper, shape them into burger shapes, cover in flour and fry. gorgeous with most potatoes, and if they are still bland just add more pepper or fat (or add in cheese or some herbs..)Oh and I wouldn't compound the problem by microwaving them..that does enough damage to normal potatoes as it is..

I dont think there is anything you can do to tinned potato's to make them nice. I tried everythin i can possibly think of over the last 4 years at uni - no matter what u add to them, theres always that really rotton taste coming through. Sometimes id rather go hungry that reach for the tin opener

You could use them in a curry too. Basically anything that hides their awful taste. Just out of interest, why does anyone really buy them, especially if you don't like them? Did a crate of them fall off the back of a lorry outside your house?

To be honest, potato's with a sell by date of 5 years are NOT potato's

'Bombay Style' Tinned Spuds
1 Tin spuds 1/2 tsp Turmeric 2-3 tsp of Vegetable or Olive oil 2-4 dried chillies 8-12 Curry leaves (if dried, leave in freshly boiled water for 5 -10 mins to revive)Personally I just bung a goodly handful in 2 med onions, peeled & finely chopped 2-4 green chillies (chop finely for hot, leave whole just to add flavour). Fistful of fresh Coriander leaves (50g approx.), chopped. 1/4 tsp Asafoetida 1 tsp of Cumin, Yellow &/or Black Mustard, Black Onion, Fennel & Nigella seeds. 1 Lemon Salt to taste. What to do: Put the tinned tatties with their liquor onto a pan, add 1/2 tsp turmeric & bing to a simmer. whilst these are simmering Heat the oil in a large wok or frying pan & fry the dried chillies & curry leaves till they start to brown. Now add the green chilli, Asafoetida , chopped onion, seeds & 1/2 the coriander. Fry until the onions are soft & starting to brown. Now add the drained spuds, folding into the mix & adding a sprinkle of water if required. Cook for about 5 mins on a high heat, stirring occasionally Add Lemon juice to taste, I recon the juice of 1/2 a lemon is about right, but it's a personal thing. Once cooked add the remainder of the coriander. Serve immediately. Yumtastic Add chopped fresh tomatoes for a bit of colour

Potato cooking update: I didn't manage to get round to trying it out last night.
Tonight is the night - and with 'real' potatoes. I'm actually going to try potato cakes as I have the ingredients.

Lee's lazy grub which has no name.
1 load of Mince or veggie alternative nicely fried. 1 jar of jalfrezi sauce 1 tin of spuds Cook the mince and add the jalfrezi sauce and simmer for about 5 mins. Pour mixture into an oven-proof dish and the top with the potatoes chopped and spinkle with some grated cheese. Place in oven and cook @ about 160-200 degrees until the spuds on top have cooked - usually about 20 minutes ![]() Serve with side salad or chips ![]() Easy as anything too cook - looks very fancy if served correctly. |
