Plasma TV Problem - Advice
A friend of mine has a problem.
Just under 2 years ago they bought a 46" Sony plasma TV which cost around £2400 which 4 months ago had a fault so they sent it back to the shop for repair. The shop didn't manage to fix it and sent it back 2 weeks later. Last week they received a cheque for £899 and friend isn't pleased at all. They want to send the cheque back and complain because it's only 1/3 of what they paid. Is there anything they can do - they might be prepared to accept 1500? |

This will probably be in the terms of their extended warranty. Me and dad were asking a John Lewis assistant how their 5 year warantee worked, and if they can't repair it the refund is based on a percentage of the original purchase price which decreases over time.
If it's in the agreement then i don't think there is a lot he can do. Could be wrong though. |

Yup, this is well within the rights of a limited warranty, or pretty much any warranty really. The expected lifespan of the product, the amount of use, wear and tear, current market value of item and replacement and many other things (but basically depreciation overall) are factored in when deciding what amount to refund.
That said, it's always worth a haggle, as you can argue you don't think it's a fair amount. Especially if you plan to buy another product from the same retailer. You could ask them to meet you some way between the cost of the new one and the value of the refund. They can only say no. You'll probably have less luck if it's a third party warranty, but have a go anyway ![]() Try and find the equivalent product now (maybe a 46W LCD ?) and explain how you can't get one of these for the same money, but you'd be willing to meet them somewhere in between. Be firm, but nice, it makes it harder for them to say no. I've never given anyone more than they deserved if they were arsey. Good luck ![]() |

It depends on the retailer and the warranty service thats affiliated to them, if it was Dixons/Curry's and it was Cover Planm then thats no more than I'd expect to be honest with you. They are looking at the spec of the TV and what is available, they don't go on the brand of it, they just go by spec, I know you can pick up a Samsung 46 Inch LCD for that sort of money if you look hard enough, and that exactly what seems to have been done in this instance.
I know it was probably wrong of me to compare a plasma to an LCD, but you get my drift. The prices of equipment have gone way down over the last 2 years, and like others have said there is next to nothing that can be done. It's down to the managers discression at the end of the day. That said if it was a Dixons/Curry's cover then I know you can get them to bump the value of the voucher/cheque bumped up getting the store to phone in with the details of a slightly more expensive TV and try your luck that way, I know I've done it for the odd £50 to £100 so might be worth ago if you can get them to talk it upto a £1000 as I know you can get a decent bit of telly that for that money ![]() |
