    PS3 vs a hi-def DVD player

i just sold my DVD player and i have a dilemma. i need advice: would you choose to buy an upscaling HDMI DVD player or a PS3 which (as far as i know) upscales ordinary dvd, plays blu-ray discs and full 1080p games? which is more ideal and practical?

nope, got one of these, and its not plugged in right now. Enough said?

(its far too loud to be used in the same room).

My PS3 dosen't upscale regular DVDs, mabye theres a setting, i've never gone looking for it.

As for a bluray player its really not bad, takes a little while to start (5~10 seconds from cold), the controller is a rather useless remote, if you catch one of hte buttons on the underside, you skip chapter, not nice. Quality of the bluray i've found to be great, this is at 1080p. As costs go, its not that bad if you want to play games too (pitty there aren't many )

PS3 does upscale DVD its in the options section, if ur running 1080p then u can set it to fullscreen upscale, it does improve some newer DVD's but some older ones the improvement isn't so big, however still preferable to regular DVD quality

but does the PS3 plays DVDs with no problem? (heard of fan noise, greens creens, etc.) is this true? and is it also true that an update a few days back upscales DVDs to 1080p?

The quality difference between PS3 upscaling and a DVD upscaler is not enough to consider changing just for that.

And the latest updates have added a lot of functionality.

That basically silent addon, makes more noise than my slot loading PS3, total, forget the jet sound of the 360.

Recon the 360 HD addon is defective?

Probably, given the defects in the 360's too..

If you want to listen to a film and the noise of the drive make it impossible then it's hardly fit for the purpose of what it was sold to do

both where different suppliers different batches, wasn't well engineered imo so i assumed it to be normal, the 360 makes as much sound as my mates.

TBH, use the PS3, get the latest update for it and fiddle with the settings..

Even the anally retentive videophiles have rated the PS3 as one of the best performing upscaling players, both from DVD and HD sources
