    Backed up a few DVDs...

And now have 5x 500GB and 2x 250GB drives of data

On average there is about 6GB of data on a DVD and I have 465 of them.

I really need to get a NAS box to start putting these drives into, they are sitting in a pile on my sideboard at the moment.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but _why_ copy 465 uncompressed DVD's to a NAS?

Here we have 5 boxes stuffed with DVDs:

I have 13 boxed half the size of CDs on a pallet, on a shelf in the warehouse at work
Thats where these are going in the net couple of days.

    Some hard drives:

    In order:
2x400GB - general files storage, backups of my laptop etc.
1x500GB - my FLAC archive in a quiet aluminium case
    5x500GB + 2x250GB - My DVD archive
1x80GB - a random old drive that came out of a firewire case i now have a DVD-RW in

I couldn't possibly discuss that due to the legal implications this under current copyright laws.

But the whole point of this excercise is that i need never load any of those DVDs again. I can watch the main feature or any of the extras without having to find the blasted disk first.

I know I'm being pedantic...it's what makes me so cute...but it's actually illegal, in the UK, to back up your own disks.

I know it's silly, and in the US it's perfectly legit, but it's not actually strictly legal here, in good old Blighty!

Now..no one shout at me for weird copyright infringement laws...cos you'll get a blank look and then I'll cry for being bullied.

But....this thread will have to go soon.

I'll await a pm from Funkstar, for whom I have a great deal of respect, and if he agrees to me closing it...I will.

If he want's it left open...I'll have to discuss it with all the other mods and admins. But effectively, weirdly, this thread puts us in a legal tight spot.

I would agree with Zak33 it is a grey area to back up your own discs in the UK at the moment therefore I think this thread shall be closed shortly.

I can see why someone would want to back up there collection of discs there are several advantages to doing so

I have just been told by someone that it is legal to make ONE copy of CD's or DVD's etc, is this true?
