Google for "SUPER" and this will do what you want. It will play pretty much anything, it will also convert pretty much anything to pretty much anything else.

I'm not going to direct link to it as I seem to remember there are some potential legal issues with regards to licenses in the software it uses.

Any Video DVD Converter is a professional video converter which can convert any format video files and YouTube clips with fast speed and excellent video quality.

Does the trick, there is a free edition that will convert FLV to avi etc no watermarks. I use that to convert FLV files for my Zen. be wary of the settings though as you can sometimes end up with audio and video out of synch.

there's a reason they all work - they all use the same app to do the actual conversion!

my next questions would be...what (free or open-source) software would you use in burning them? and

would you burn them onto a DVD-RW or a DVD-R?

is this safe to install as my main worries are:

    1. if this is freeshare or shareware it might contain spywares.

    2. it's on a trial and need to buy the whole thing

    3. it converts less than a 100% if it's a freeware or "free to try then buy"

vixy.net : Online FLV Converter : Download online videos direct to PC / iPod / PSP. It's free!

it's an online converter. You just put the URL of the file you want and when it's converted you download the converted file.

I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.
