    Freesat on SKY HD

    Small question.

can I receive the freesat HD channels if I get the SKY HD box?

    BBC HD? Yes.

    ITV HD? No.

But then ITV HD is nearly pointless as there is so little broadcast used on it.

Why not ITV HD? What stops that from working as whats to say it want happen to other HD Channels. I like the idea of supporting freeview HD but not if I can save on the costs of the hardware and get sky.

I think it is contractual rather than a technical problem - I guess ITV is firmly finding itself in the Freesat camp, and as such Sky cannot broadcast it through their HD system.

    It's both.

ITV HD is not a channel, it's a data stream - like all those red button services you get on Freeview. Sky's interactive service isn't remotely as powerful as Freeview/Freesat's, so it can't switch streams the way ITV HD requires.

This blockage was intentional, to make it Freesat-only

Its a shame that a freesat box with inbuilt hard drive is above £200 and then installation on top. Its makes SKY Hd seem relatively cheap...

You can now manually tune to ITV HD with the new Sky HD EPG.

Wish my sky box would update

Can't get it on my box which hasn't yet been updated. Annoyingly I had one of the boxes which should have been updated, but it died recently. Ironically, possibly after an update

Now have a brand-new box, which means it may be a while before I have ITV HD.

Unless the rules have changed recently, I think you'll find that you won't be able to use the recording functions of an HD (or Sky+) box unless you have a subscription.
