...but have no idea which game is best, what do you guys recommend?
Also, you have to pay a monthly subscription for use of the server in these games yes? Would like some action as well as just roleplay, Cheers, |

I personally play Guild Wars now and again. No subscription fees and the first campaign (Prophecies) can be picked up for £10 (currently out of stock at play.com). Trials are hard to come by though.

Likewise, I play Guild Wars. More like an action MMOG rather than a game like World Of Warcraft or Lord Of The Rings.
I went for Guild Wars as it has no monthly subs, ideal for me as I have 3 kids and they have to come first when it comes to money. In games like WoW and LOTRO every town and outpost can be entered and just walked through, you can run into people in the wild whilst just exploring. In Guild Wars you have the outposts where you can team up with other players and get quests etc. However once you leave a town or outpost you won't run into anyone at all except NPC's. All you have is the people or NPC's you have with you. Most of the time you can actually play Guild Wars single player with a group of NPC's. You can even do some of the missions with NPC's. Its more like Diablo with the skills etc and the way it plays, completely action orientated. I played the beta of LOTRO and also had a 10 day trial for WoW. I found both of these games very similar in the way the skills and craft system worked (Even the way they looked and were animated to an extent). After playing both for a few days just got completely bored with them and uninstalled. However with Guild Wars I keep going back, I will openely admit that I think Factions is the poor one of the 3 games. The setting is really good but it just feels like a long slog to actually get anywhere on it. Prophecies and Nightfall are excellent. Prophecies is very Arthurian and Nightfall is Egyptian, Factions offers a middle eastern taste. You can pick all three games up now for £20 or less and as mentioned the excellent Prophecies a mere tenner at play. I picked Factions and Nightfall up for £20 each from Tesco and Game respectively. You can get any of these 3 campaigns also. Each one is standalone, Eyes of the North though when it comes out later this year is an expansion that does require one of the origional 3 chapters. Personally I would go for either Nightfall or Prophecies first, depends what setting intruiges you most. Pesonally I am hooked on Nightfall at the min ![]() |

No never heard of it, looking into it now that you have mentioned it! Always worthwhile looking into new games, especially stuff that a lot of people will never have heard of. Could be that illusive diamond in the rough.

A FPS MMOG sounds good to me but apparently it's bad from what I can tell, but then again I've also read bad things about Guild Wars...
WOW seems to be the best at teh mo, not sure I want to pay a monthly for it though!! |

Ultima Online, one of the first and largest MMORPGs has a new graphics client coming out in the next couple of months. As far as gameplay goes, I haven't ever played an MMORPG that had the same depth as UO. You can get a free trial at www.uo.com I believe.
It is celebrating it's 10th anniversary this year! |

I play GW also and can reccomend it to you.
Nightfall Collectors edition is £18 from Amazon atm, which is cheaper than normal version. With no subscription fee's its a no-brainer if you wanna try a quality MMOG. |

My advice stay away From them
![]() MMOG`s are the devils work hehe. They do eat up lots of time. I have managed to escape from WOW for the second time. Its a really good game but There are times when like most MMOgs it becomes a grind. WOW is a great game though. Graphics are really good and there are loads of ppl on the servers which can be really fun especially when you get into a guild. Some of the funniest moments in MMogs have happened in WOW for me. City of heroes was a good laugh as well. I havent played since before city of villains and I`ve been told a lot of things habe improved. The Instances where a bit samey back then but it seems this has all been improved. UO was fun as well again I havent played for a number of years(In fact I was on dial up last time I played) The game was very in depth and there was loads to do and horses could be got at low lvls which made travel quicker. Played the original Everquest as well fora few months I was pretty let down by that. I suppose part of the problem is that at the time I was reall into another MMOG called Meridian 59 which still has a very special place in my heart and I think was one of the first MMOg`s out even before UO. EVE was also fun but I didnt play for long. The problem I had with EVE was also the feature I though was cool. I liked the fact that you didnt have to grind to lvl up in the way you do in most MMOG`s the problem though was that because it was real time to incrase skills you where at a bit of a disadvantage |

I believe Anarchy Online is still free, they keep extending the date on the free period. You can get the initial game and one of the addons now. I tried it but found the interface a bit confusing and didn't play for to long.
I have fancied Lineage 2 and also Dark Age of Camelot. Both games have plenty players and could be worth looking into. |

for me, i cant only really play an mmo if i already know people who are, i find it hard to get into. for that reason id say start with something that you know people already playing in.
my views on the games: i played and enjoyed guildwars for a while, but i just prefer the freedom of wow, where you walk around, no loadign screens, and can meet people anywhere, but some of the gw missions were fantastic. just recently quit wow, best mmo ive played, but i did start playing it when i had mates who were max level, that could show me what to do and where to go, and helped me past the boring bits. however the new expansion just isntt hat great. theres absolutley loads of stuff in it, but its all about grinding for this or grinding for that. the arena PVP is very very good fun though! (if not slightly annoying when you get owned!) |

WoW is old hat and has a large amount of 'l33t' talking kids on there, which tends to ruin the ambience for me.
However it may float your boat if you like talking in text speak. Give Lord of the Rings Online a try, so far so good for me. To be honest though, I think whichever one you try, you'll enjoy it, they're all pretty much of a muchness. |

Id have to agree with Scientist, I have a great time with RL friends and people I've met in-game in Wow.
But saying that, any game can be ruined by idiots, alot of it can be luck. |
