    Ars System Guide: HTPC edition

Arstechnica are really testing my willpower. I don't need an HTPC system, but oh my word do I want one. Ars take a look at what you need for a lower end system and also the kit required for a high end big daddy HDTV extravaganza.
As a simple DVR replacement, essentially a TiVo or ReplayTV, a HTPC is not a cost-effective solution. As a combined DVD and DVR replacement, a HTPC still is not cost-effective. Speaking purely from a cost standpoint, a HTPC needs to be used for what it really offers — a complete media center solution — before it becomes worthwhile. If less functionality is required, save the money and the hassle, and buy a DVR if you want a DVR. It will be cheaper and easier to use, with less headaches, particularly for those who are not computer oriented.
I keep nodding and trying to accept that, but for some reason it doesn't stop me wanting an HTPC.

It's next on my list actually, although it'll probably never happen. I'd love one of those nanode cases from Hoojum.
