After cable recall, Xbox's still frying

Remember the Xbox power cord recall? Well it was a pointless effort if you expected it to fix the problem with your Xbox. The new cord doesn't fix the problem, instead it just stops the problem burning your house down. The Register reports on the real problem:
Ryan, an Xbox modder in Northern California who has disassembled the console, confirms that solder on two prongs holding the Foxlink power supply in place wear out. The problem affects versions 1.0 and 1.1 of the power supply. The design flaw was fixed in subsequent power supplies.

Why bother really, all those older versions are no longer covered by warranty. They should do as sony does, exchange it for a re-furbished one...which will cost you, and probably break in the near future.

So the problem is that repeated plugging / unplugging the mains lead can cause damage. Rather than tell us that, they send us a new mains lead ... causing us to unplug the old one and plug in the new. The very action behind the fault. Genius.

Somebody tell MS that British plugs already have fuses!

The new leads have RCD's though don't they? They are a lot more effective than a fuse, which in comparison has a frightfully long burnout time in event of overcurrent.
