Radeon X800, XL distribution costs revealed @ The Tech Report

Where have all the Radeons gone? What happened to the expected prices too? These are questions The Tech Report have been asking.
We have been following the story of pricing and availability of the latest ATI cards for some time now. We have recently learned that the cost to resellers of Radeon X800 and X800 XL cards via distribution is higher than ATI's suggested retail price. In some cases, this information changes the math on which video card we'd recommend, the ATI or the NVIDIA.

Interesting point - but actually hard to measure because of things like exchange rates

Let's take the X800XL as am example because it is proving massively popular

Stores like Komplett have it in stock (at the time of writing) for £207

Take away sales tax (which we can't control and which varies from country to country), then we have £176

If you divide the price quoted in press releases ($299) by 176 (£) - then you can see that if the dollar exchange rate moved below $1.70 - then the target price would have been achieved

The dollar rate is around $1.88 right now - but (if I remember correctly) has been around $1.5 in the past couple of years

If the dollar moved to $1.5 again - then the equivelant UK price would be $265

It is a tricky business - and one that is never likely to be easier to predict - even for someone with Doc's billions

    .

You are (of course) quite right Andrezj.

I judge price/performance once I can see a part listed on an etailers site and I can actually obtain one. That way I don't get confused.
