What now for AMD and ATI?

Now that we know the merger is definitely happening, it's time to start looking toward the future and what the deal actually means, not just for the two companies involved, but the industry as a whole.

Using our industry insight, we've had a poke around to see where AMD and ATI have perhaps struggled in the past, but may well make headway as a combined force.

I certainly hope something good comes out of this merger. I've always been a bit sceptical about ATI chipsets and their graphics cards. Maybe because they don't have anything for my price range (either too cheap and slow of too expensive and fast ). And I too hope this doesn't severely affect nVidia.

We are going to see a lot of politics now, with Intel favouring Crossfire at the moment that will probably shift to SLI. All sorts of factors, will be interesting to see how this pans out over the next few years.

but i thaught AMD and Nvidia were seeing each other? this is because Nvidia started flirting with Intel (chipsets) isnt it? now AMD's gone and run off with Nvidia's enemy ATI...

Its a compressed week of corrie!

Well ATI are doing Intel-based chipsets too, and had Crossfire support from the i975s too.

Not any more they're not, Intel decided not to renew their bus license, and it was only ever a fill-in while Intel ironed out their own chipset bugs..

This isn't as bad as it seems, AMD knows how much it needs Nvidia's chipsets so Nvidia won't lose in the chipset department as thier proven already.

in the sense of graphic's Nvidia know they need to do a deal with intel as they will see massive sales from an intel branded SLI compatible chipset.
As conroe is the new leader in processing power and ati's lack of crossfire on an intel chipsets, this time for nvidia to capitalise on a bit of the market it wants.

i think if nvidia and intel do a SLI deal its all over for AMD-ATI

So how long before we see the demise of the graphics card as we know it then? With multicores now becoming the norm, they could in theory pass all the graphic duties over to a core. SLI type performance on chip . Want more power? Add another core.......
