Vista 5728 available but for limited time and with limitations

A new public beta version of the Windows Vista operating system, build 5728, is now available but only for a limited time and with some limitations that might mean you'd want to steer clear and stick with RC1 build 5600.
Find out more in this HEXUS.hardline.

from the comments i've read on it and the changes, this seems to be yet again another improvement

supposed to be quicker and more stable than 5600, although it had less internal testing its got a few improvements

def worth a shot, thats what beta testing is about!

I'll make an effort over the coming days to try out 5728 and will report back - would be good if others who also tried it out let us have their feedback.

I'll slap it on in place of the RC1 install I have at the moment and see how it goes. Still using XP as my main OS, and I suspect this will be the case until Vista SP1 comes out...

Apparently this is supposed to be 'RTM' quality. Some of the bugs in RC1 have been fixed, but there are still some irritating problems with explorer.

I wonder what the 'M's are making of it, then?

Clean blank HDD? Is that installed alongside another disk with XP installed perchance? If so you'll find that installing this build has wiped out your bootloader, which MS warned about. If not feel free to smack me upside the head...

nope, no xp on it. its just a blank formatted 250gb maxtor, chucked the pc together, tried to boot from the dvd and that happened.

edit: it was the storage drive on my other xp system, but no xp installed on it.

Just to keep you amused - I burned the image I downloaded, tested it out (it booted fine) and then realised I'd downloaded 5600, not the new one!

    D'oh!

Well, if the new one causes problems, at least I've got a fall back (which I had intended to download tonight anyway).

    Now let's get downloading again!

it runs 'ok' ok my 1.7ghz p4, but the graphics card is a really old crappy nvidia vanta, so i get a rating of 1.0, lol the rest of the pc is ok, but i switched to classic view to get it working

    working well

i had 5600 on my opteron and it really flew, the time to recover from sleep on any pc with vista is really short which is impressive for a windows user

I just tried to install this and it complained about a missing DVD-drive driver, which is a fairly original complaint. It could read the SATA hard disk but not the DVD, despite having just booted from it.

72% downloaded, I'll give it a go later. Got Longhorn to tinker with too.
