Mine's not been anywhere except home and work, yet.

I've not had chance or desire to use it whilst sitting in a Starbuck's wearing a polo neck,* either. I'd keep a tight grip on my iPad if I were in a public place, on the train etc. as they are eminently nickable.

So far, it's mainly been used for browsing at home and reading some ebooks and I've found myself playing games on it (particularly air hockey and snooker.)

    *and trousers of some sort.

I'm interested in a tablet - but I too would use it (probably) just at home. I've always thought the ipad was too heavy and that a half-the-battery-lighter one would suit me better. Oh, and it'd needs to run android or windows 7. So er.. not an ipad

Well you've not got long to wait by the sound of it!

The old iPad is definitely heavier than I thought it would be but the majority of the weight lies in the battery apparently and the run time is worth it (I'm fairly chunky with strong wrists - make of that what you will - so the weight issue isn't too bad for me.)

I never thought I'd go Mac for anything, TBH but I'm really enjoying the iPad so far.

Sorry - but you just brightened my day

Seriously tho - that's my point - if you're housebound then 10 hour life is a nice to have but far from a must and so that's why i'd say i'd prefer a lighter unit (chortle) because on balance that's more important to me and my limp wrists (guffaw).

Yeah, mine never leaves the house - mainly because its good as an ereader and web browser,
but not fully multi purpose, like the netbook in my briefcase...

Been reading about the Asus ones, and the EP121 sounds great! A tablet which can be a laptop or a desktop with the right dock. Awesome! Might be just what I need to replace my netbook.

The Android tablets won't come into their own until Android 3.0, which will have true support for higher resolutions. Once that happens I will be very tempted, especially if there is full Marketplace support, until then I would go for a W7 based one... if I was actually looking for one, which I'm not

Re: News - Quarters of iPad owners keep their tablet housebound

We definitely live in 'interesting times' in regards to tablets.

I've never used anything Archos and I've yet to have a play with anything Android on it. I was very dismissive of the iPad when it came out and it certainly was not my intention to get one. Then I played with one in an Apple store almost by accident (the girlfriend was shoe shopping, so I took cover somewhere 'gadgetty') and it hooked me! I had pondered getting a tablet of some sort in the future but I wasn't prepared to bite the bullet so quickly. Early adoption and all that...

Mine is almost a netbook replacement, though not quite, as mikerr notes. There are a lot of daft Apple-induced shortcomings (lack of ports, bloody iTunes etc.) but it does get a lot of use and the netbook is now really only used by my other half when she's visiting. I would imagine gen 2 and 3 of the iPad will be pretty interesting. My gut feeling is that I'll probably end up with a Windows 7 (or maybe Windows 8!?) tablet at some point in the future - or maybe you'll see me queuing in Oxford Street for the next gen iPad! (I doubt it, though!)
