You will clearly be able to use the devices much more generally, though FXI's marketing spin has been strongly on the cloud. I think how it turns out will all be down to the OEMs that pick it up.

Hmmm, can I put full Linux on it, that has lightweight server written all over it.

No interest in it's intended purpose, although it is pretty cool and I could see it selling if marketed right as a TV addon, not some wafty cloud bollocks. Most newer TVs could supply USB power via their port and have it just dangle behind. Could work nicely with Google's new content initiatives, and if I wasn't the owner of an HTPC it might interest me more.

Great idea but when i compare it to my Optimus 2x i dont really see the need? I have a minihdmi port (with cable supplied at purchase) so all i do is connect my O2x up to monitor and bam i got mirroring and best of all i can connect blutooth keyboards and mice (i actually had a dell mouse on there for a bit to try it).

I guess its essentially a 2011 smartphone without the display? Its great if you take it as a flash drive replacement type thing.

Original article did say " the unit is able to decode 1080P MPEG4 and various other video formats and will run either Android or Ubuntu Linux.". Although I'm guessing that this is the much-touted "Server" edition of Ubuntu, e.g. see http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/10/ubuntu-11-10-arm/

That's what it said to me - there's plenty of non-"internet-enabled" TV's for which this'd be ideal. Heck, even partnered with a decent Internet-capable TV, this'd surely be a good thing for sort of "HTPClite" - being able to do docs etc on your TV.

Quite like the Android version, especially if it's the full deal - i.e. with access to Google Market Place. Stick something like Docs2Go and one of the new printer apps and be able to have a fast booting way to do the odd word processor doc etc. Best of all, no "gadgety thing" visible to annoy SWMBO!

An interesting alternative to this for dabblers could be the "Raspberry Pi" project...
