I've got the Nokia N8, (probably going to get the pureview too) and would not get a compact camera to replace it, some of the photo's i've got out of it are stunning, that and its always with me. I would love to have a propper camera though for landscapes though.

Until they get a smartphone camera that zooms, people will still need dedicated cameras.

Re: News - Camera sales survive smartphone assault

The earlier predictions were still sort of correct, however. Smartphones has definitely eaten away almost the entire market for cheap, low-end cameras, you barely even see that type of model being made anymore. However what the prediction didn't take account of was that while smartphones would become good enough to compete with the low-end camera market, the high-end market would grow fast enough to compensate for this and then some. Far more people own SLR's than they used to, in the film days the only people that really had an SLR were serious or professional photographers, now - with the convenience of digital and the entry level DSLR models - basically anyone remotely interested in taking good photos can buy one. Then on top of that you've got very good high end compacts and the emerging micro systems vying for consumers' disposable income.

Re: News - Camera sales survive smartphone assault

It depends entirely on what you're shooting. Phone cameras are still very poor in low light, so generally for most things indoors that you'll treasure, you'll need something more than even the best smartphones can currently offer, or certainly any of them that I've seen.

I wouldn't say it is peoples confidence levels with smartphone cameras.........more that people have gotten into photography using their smartphone and get the itch to get something better.

Pretty much everyone has an entry level camera now....that has to effect the number of people who are into photography.

    Did you read the article?

The 5d mk2 is by no means going to be the second most popular, its damned expensive.

Also, as mentioned in the article a large part of the last Q growth was due to the forex.

But its the least popular for sending MMS!

Context is everything here. I think its interesting to see the split in flickr users here, far more iPhone 4 users than anything else, but yet, it's market share isn't that big.

As such we can't really call it a sample that is respective of the target population.

So basically, its irrevelent to the discussion and as cat says, just go and buy one so you quit fanboying about it

The thing is though there are loads of people with entry level cameras who would not be arsed even posting on flickr. It could be that more iPhone 4 and Eos 5D MK2 feel the need to put their pictures on flickr.

I get the slight feeling TheAnimus probably could afford a Canon Eos 5D MK2 or MK3!

Also, the photographer is the most important metric and there are many times when a dSLR is not even the best piece of equipment to use for a job.

A good photographer even with older or inferior equipment>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> A poorer photographer even with better equipment.

Its about getting the most out of what you have. The issue is that people are trying to look at something like computers and then equate it to photography which in many cases is an art form.

Why do u think i now shoot film and people say i am producing better shots?

definetly agree that "YOU" > gear. simple.

All i was saying on topic is that 5d2 is the most popular DSLR in flickr. that is all

Problem is you didn't qualify that, in your post you simply said its the second most popular camera.

That is also quite meaningless in the context of this article, unless your suggesting it galvanises people between Full Frame and a Mobile Phone?

But the users of Flickr? how's that relate to Camera Phones vs Cameras.......................

(you can see where I'm coming from)
