Hmm, that's close to home - I noted that my speeds have rapidly dropped off in the last week. Inexplicable until I discovered that VirginMedia had "upgraded" my line speed in the same period. In the UK, in the final 3 months of 2011, the average speeds slipped from 5.1Mbps to 4.9Mbps.
Ah well, off to do the usual VM debugging process - swear at VM and then reboot the StupidHub!

I want finger extensions ... then I can play this darned guitar properly!
I have to say that I am new to an ADSL line having enjoyed a 20Mbps cable connection for years - since moving in February I have had a 11Mbps line from sky and the connection has been rock solid. Having said that, ADSL upload is diabolical - took 12 hours to backup 3.8Gb of photos to dropbox WTF.
VM set uplink to 10% of downlink....so you were getting 2Mb upload before......with ADSL you are probably getting 1Mb.....so it doubles the time.
FTTC/Infinity have packages with uplink speeds of 10Mb (40Mb service) and 20Mb (80Mb service) if you upload a lot.....I believe Sky are starting to roll this out.

Virgin Media throttle me right down, as a heavy user of Iplayer, Love Film and 4OD I get decimated by them!
