I wouldn't say I see droves, but I have seen a fair few people with a Nokia Lumia in their hand, and to be honest, I didn't notice anyone with any Nokia's last year.

Has anyone done any research into how accurate or not predictions from these market analysis firms are? I've always dismissed them but market analysts are always in the news with their forecasts so someone must think they're worth their pay?

Yes, only in that quarter, and only in Russia and China, but still a remarkable achievement. WP may overtake the iPhone in terms of sales, however installed user base is the metric you really want to look at, and WP won't come anywhere near any of the other big platforms for a long long time.

Never the less, jumping the gun and making snap judgements which aren't supported by statistically significant evidence is daft. Hence directhex's xkcd citation.

the big driving force behind any new product is how much it hits your pocket:

with an iphone - unless your prepared to take on a £60 a month tarriff on day 1 then you have to pay for the phone - my tarriff is £20 , and for an iphone i would have to pay £400 for it!

and thats why nokia are doing *better* - the cost to end users.

I'm going to get a Windows Phone 8 device later this year. Either a Nokia, HTC or maybe Samsung. If we knew for certain whether you can upgrade the Nokia Lumia 800/900 phones to WP8, I would probably have one now.
