Re: News - AMD announces CPU cashback programme

what we really want is for this cashback incentive to stick around for those upcoming desktop Trinity parts.
Not a chance. This is a last desperate bid to clear stock of FX- and A- processors before the new ones launch. And if it doesn't work, expect even bigger price cuts, then huge drops on remaining stock once trinity does launch. Might well be worth holding off for a couple of months for anyone planning on building a new HTPC - I can see the A-series APUs dropping even further...

Why not just reduce the selling price than have all this rebate / cashback bs ?

Can an A series give you better performance than an Athlon X2 with 4200 IGP or even paired with a budget graphics card even in an HTPC situation.

    Epic win.

I bought an AMD FX4170 for £85 last week. And now I can get an extra £10 off. For £75 that is amazing.

Dropping prices is only news for 1 days, but keep a promotion running for a month or two and it stays in the topic of conversation on forums and etailers.

Also, lots of people either don't know about or will forget about the cashback offer, with lower prices they'd guarantee lower profits on every chip...

It's an American thing. I guess companies would rather make a cashback offer, hoping only ~10% send in the claim coupons, and be able to advertise $/€/£X off, even with the administration overhead involved, than make blanket cuts every customer would receive.

because this stops people (retailers/resellers) buying to then sell on discounted, keeping the market value (retail Value) inflated.

The terms and conditions on AMD's promotions website are probably invalid. It says, "see list below for Authorized eTailers," but there is no list. It'll be pot luck whether you get your cash back unless they update that.

Re: News - AMD announces CPU cashback programme

if amd wanna see their CPUs flying off the shelves, they should make equivalent or better performing, cooler, more energy and power efficient processors than Intel and sell those at equivalent prices or even cheaper than Intel products. period. these gimmicks are useless.

This. It is extremely common in the US,and plenty of products including Intel and AMD CPUs have these offers and this includes even SB Core i5 CPUs last year. Even Corsair PSUs which are considered a "premium" brand in the UK and are popular among enthusiasts, have had massive rebates on PSUs like the CX430W going for yonks.

In fact you are seeing this more and more in the UK too. An example are with the rebates from Samsung and HP.

And lets not forget the HP Microserver which was popular with forum members; they renewed that plenty of times!
