News - Surface 2 reportedly already in development

Is Microsoft in this for the long haul, despite claims that it's just setting the standard?

Not that I'd put it beyond a big corporation to lie about whether or not they're developing something but from the information here, is it not possible they are working on laptop/netbook/zune (iPod touch)-type devices rather than surface 2?

Could be the phone, that's been rumoured for a while.

Risky business with the OEM partners already peeved. I'd actually love Surface to be amazing and maybe this is indicative of the confidence in it? If they can make serious money even if they lose 50% of the OEMs surely that would be the way to go?

Without the OEMs, they'd never shift enough units to get the platform going quickly enough for the developers -> fewer apps -> eventual death.

Of course, they don't need all the OEMs.

Personally I'd like them to keep in flagship hadware (like Google/Nexus) but keep the OEMs on board to keep the reach and range they'd never manage alone.

I think the title is a bit sensationalist (I know you've borrowed it from elsewhere) but the evidence isn't outright proof of "Surface 2" just that they are expanding their product design section - for what is still an unknown
