Nah, 1080p is enough and apart from films would you really watch the dross (there's a few good programmes but they are few and far between) we're fed via the broadcast channels on it?

    Hmmm.

I am surprised how soon they have released them. Has there even been a broadcast standard ratified for 4k yet? (Let alone any real content!)

You would also need about £2k of PC equipment to game on it at 4k....

No mention of arguably the important thing....Does it do 1080p48?

Not to my knowledge, all the official standards that are in place for this resolution are based on DCinema. Doubt we will see it over the airwaves till codecs go vector based, by then it will be over IP anyway.

Re: News - 4K television to land next month, thanks to 84in LG 3D Smart TV

I read that the Olympics opening ceremony was recorded in SuperHD (4k) and was shown in some cinemas across the world.

Has anyone noticed the bitrate of SD channels seems lower than before HD channels were available? Or that the SD equivalents are worse now, in a bid to force you to upgrade to HD.

I discovered this with Sky Sports. I remember when it fist came out and was flicking between SD & HD. The clarity was noticeable but the gulf between them didn't make it essential. Doing the same thing today, and the SD channel looks like a low quality internet stream.

HD requires more bandwidth and Sky are trying to maximise their use of transponder capacity so are compressing SD.

They've released them to get everyone to rush out and buy a new TV again. They tried it with LED and 3d too. After all how can they keep selling £1000 tv's to the same people year on year with out adding features of little really value but lots of down the pub 'my new TV has got X' boosting potential!

(For the record I'm very happy with my 1080p LCD tv - not bothered by 3d and only want LED some point in the future).

It'll be glassless 3d or OLED next!

I doubt we will see any decent glassless 3d any time soon.....but tv-less 3d glasses are about to make a resurgence I believe.

The only 4k Broadcast i know has been the Olympics, with the Japanese broadcaster NHK using a 33.3MP Camera to broadcast the show on the widescreen TV's at the stadium. I would expect 4k TV's to become more common place in the next 3-5yrs, give them time and the price will drop around the 1080p tv sets. Just the waiting game now

That thing is bigger than my projector screen o.O

(Admittedly, projector screens go quite a bit bigger than that, but I wonder how much larger they are going to push TV screens)
