Ignoring all the trolls above (not sure there is one genuine post?) - it's a tough question.

Personally, I'd like:

Better battery life
No major changes to the general design (apart from a metal back ideally)
Bigger screen
Memory Card slot
Solar Charging built into the screen (as per Apple's Patent)
mini/micro USB connector which supports OTG
4G LTE support

I know some of those will never happen, but really I can't think of anything more that I want. I don't care about faster CPUs (just uses more battery and encourages lazy software development), I don't care about NFC, cameras, "Siri" or any of the other gimmicks that are constantly requested or appear on the latest Android phones. It's a bit disappointing to see the original article discussing "Specification-slapping" since any intelligent IT professional will know that it would be like comparing apples and oranges - if iOS runs perfectly happily with zero slow down on current CPU/GPUs, but Android crawls on equivalent hardware, does it matter? Not even a little bit.

Apple got it damn near perfect with the iPhone 4 design, so I really really hope they don't change it too much. We'll find out on Wednesday I guess

Like to see: Cheaper price. 100% Waterproof. 3day+ battery life. No smug advertising.

Customisation options.

One of the biggest reasons I won't buy one* is because I'm locked into what Apple thinks is best. Not being able to change they default keyboard without jail-breaking is criminal.

Widgets is another example.

While I'm sure the underlying hardware is fine, the OS is dated to me. Not being able to drop a RSS feed or custom search widget to my homepage is barmy.

*From a tech POV - I wouldn't buy one for many other reasons.

Agent - its a good point, most of what makes an iPhone is the software, and I am 100% in agreement that it is dated and needs more configuration options. Not to the level of Android imo (where its very easy to make your device unusable if you do something stupid) but definitely in that sort of direction.

Widgets would be the way to go imo, custom keyboards would be nice too, and a better notification system that isn't pinched from HTC Manilla (WM6 era).

Thats the software though which I would divorce from the phone as much as I would with Android. Although I appreciate it's more difficult with an iPhone since you don't have a choice of software. Does raise an interesting question though..if someone made an iPhone 5 that wasn't Apple branded, ran Android 4.1 and kept the same quality/parts/warranty that Apple provide..would Android fans buy one? I'd certainly by tempted, especially as I really don't like Samsung's design for the SX series (s3 in particular, its like a boat!) but have warmed to Android slightly since my purchase of a china tab.

A timeport is a *phone*. A modern day smartphone has more processing than a PC from that period.

If it's a serious question, then it's because battery technology hasn't advanced as fast as other areas.

New iphone, what it needs is
Better screen (if thats even possible, the iphone 4 has one of the best screens you can get in a smartphone)
For apple to use nokias frand patent for wireless induction charging...most of nokias profits come from apple royalties anyway...so that would be another nice feature (cough, hint samsung, if you want something, pay royalties for it, dont steal it thats how reasonable and honest companies trade)
The smaller dock connector is a neer certainty now, it looks far better than the old 30pin system, however it does leave me worried as to wether it will be more flimsy... Hopefully not
Better quality front camera, and louder loudspeaker would both be advantageous too
Who needs nfc, looks rubbish anyway, i like paying with cards...
4g on uk networks spectrums would be nice
There is always room for improvement in the camera department

And i would love to see a company who can come close with a packge deal of good quality phone, stable, solid software, and a brilliant overall experience apart from nokia, who can compete with apple on realistic terms...the nokia lumias are the only real competitors at the moment, windows phone is the only realisticly quality alternative thats not prone to dodgy software, flimsy phones, and immature companies.

And, maybe a duff offer to counter Samsung's offer. Trade in a working Galaxy S2 or S3 and provided you have bought an iPhone 5, you will get a FREE iPad3!
