I think it'd be a mighty task for Intel to dislodge ARM based chips just yet, with ASUS and Surface RT (which I think will sell the best) on ARM, I think it'd be near impossible to get the sales to secure future investment in it.

This is Intel however, and they probably won't give up that easily

AMD, with brazos 2 and their Android AppNickerZone. At least, that's what I'd like to see, although I doubt they'll hit enough major OEMs to get a good slice of the market. Shame though, they almost certainly have the best tech for Win 8 x86 tablets...

From a consumer point of view, rather than a winner a level and competitive playing field is better. From a dominant position one company can drip feed advancements and charge what they like for products, strong and competitive rivals particularly if its a little different is only good all round for the technology market.

Such a niche market I'm not sure it overly matters, but competition is healthy!

niche market? I'm sure you saw the recent news that one set of stats suggests tablet sales (unit wise) matched notebooks in the UK in August? http://www.reghardware.com/2012/09/2...ops_in_august/

So tablets are a very important market for all involved! How large Windows will be in there, I'm not sure... but I imagine they might be able to make a pretty big dent, depending on Windows RT pricing!

Tablets yeah a big market, but this blurry line of overprices 'full' Windows 8 tablets/laptop/things with Intel chips is going to fly as fast as the Ultrabooks (a great idea but just missed the mark in terms of public appeal due to the price).

+1 I will also wait for x86 AMD option bcoz of opencl and apps that can be taken advantage of.

Any good x86 processor so we can run real windows apps rather than a tonne of flash games for kids and shallow substitutes of productive software (with possible exception of Office for RT)

Does anyone know if a tablet with the full fat Windows 8 will run java based chat clients which do not run on Android or IOS. That may well sell a Win8 tablet to me.

oh yeah, the Windows 8 Pro aka full fat tablets, are just a regular PC, with the extra metro stuff on top.

And it has to be said quite a few improvements in the kernel + bootstrapping.

It isn't so much that tablets are niche, but $500+ ones like the Surface and most Win8 tablets will be. The entire Windows tablet market comes off as overpriced compared to the ipad / transformer, which are already better suited to the form factor.

Have you used one? I was lucky enough to get a play on a devs' Samsung tablet (not sure what model but not the Ativ) and I think it's awesome, certainly no worse than the competition. Pretty sure I'll get one of the RTs, depending on another hands-on. If I'm not sold then, I've been holding off buying an Ultrabook so will see what the Pros have to offer. I do however think google have wrapped up the lower end market with the N7, great piece of kit, just depends on what you want to do with them I suppose.

If the price is right, Surface could be very good for businesses.

I'm surprised that with the educated community we have here at Hexus, nobody answered MicroSoft in answer to OP's/article's question.
