    Nice wooden case there!

Also it's good to see that they are only improving specifications when it can be done within the budget for the device. So many devices promise a price point and then blast by it by adding additional hardware features.

    Although I would like to see a variant using a dual-core A9 - maybe the 2013 RaspPi :-)

There are plenty of other similiar devices that ship with dual-core variants, the Pi's whole idea is to be under $35. I can see what you're saying but I guess a newer cpu would push up the price
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!

I just wish I had the free time that I wasted when I was younger to actually make good use of the thing :-(

Yeah, they can only make the device at that price point by using a cheap SoC (actually a video SoC with ARM controller), each dollar on the SoC means comparatively high price rises. Still, next year they'll be cheaper :-)

I have been interested in one of these cheapo boards for a while now, but i find myself unwilling to buy a raspberry pi due to the whole Broadcomm situation.

What do you think about this board?

    $49

    - Allwinner A10 (ARM A8 @ 1Ghz + Mali 400)
    - 4Gb flash memory
    - 1Gb RAM
    - SATA port
    - 10/100 ethernet
    - HDMI
    - 2 USB Ports

They really are briliant! I have been loving my little RasPi with OpenElec XBMC on it. Streams HD stuff really well, and the only files which I have found to stutter are apparently fixed in the next release.
Also with a mini wi-fi n usb dongle from ebay this thing becomes amazing! Especially as OpenElec/XBMC supports CEC TV control (i.e. my tv remote control can control my RasPi through the HDMI cable).

The cubieboard looks good, the main issue is the supporting ecosystem, for which the Raspberry Pi has it all. The A10 CPU is better, even compared to the 1GHz RPi, and the fact it comes with flash and more RAM is also great too.

Re: News - Raspberry Pi now comes as standard with 512MB of RAM

I was reasonably impressed with the Rasbperry Pi for XBMC, I did sell mine on though as the performance wasn't quite there and I went for a cheap Dell from ebay instead. With the upgrade in RAM and the wider availability of cases now i may revisit this though.
