Ole Ballmer still hasn't caught on that his "new era" is what's ruining the company.

That's really not a fair thing to say based on the announcements over the last few years.

The problem for me with Ballmer is simple, he might just about be charesmatic enough to run, say one large team, thats it, and thats pushing it too.

I'm no financial wizz, but surely 4.47 billion declared + 1.36 billion undeclared = 5.83 billion which is more than 5.74 billion previous?

Ole Bill Gates had the charisma of a damp rag, he still got the job done because he filled a need (or quite a few even), rather than tried to manufacture one.

1.36bn is likely to be the £15/$15 Windows 8 upgrade voucher to existing windows 7 purchases. Not entirely guaranteed.

I was beginning to get worried about MS after trying W8. However, after trying it on an old convertible with a pretty shoddy resistive touchscreen today I have to say I was very very pleasantly surprised. It was smooth as butter and very responsive making it hard to remember how rubbish the hardware would appear to be otherwise under an older version of Windows. If they can push the Surface properly then they'll be alright.

This is the thing, spot the people who've tried it.

I will say on my Desktop I've used metro for about 15-20mins. Compared to the thousand times more on the desktop. However my mother on a non-touch laptop is loving it.

So for a pro like me, on my desktop it doesn't matter, it doesn't get in the way, its just ignored. For a tablet it works really well. It's not a huge fail.

The only issue I've had with the Metro (the other name can fornicate off) as a start menu is with certain tools. For instance I couldn't remember the name of the replacement for UISpy, and navigating to the folder of dev tools was harder than it would have been otherwise. Thats the only one I've had in a month of 100% 8 useage.

The side dock thing works really nicely, aero snap was good, but I always wanted to adjust it sometimes as its not a 50/50 split that is wanted. I wrote a terribly unstable thing that let you do that when 7 first came out actually

Actually it's news like this that supports the decision at Microsoft to push into tablets and other touchscreen form factors, since that's where the market is going, and thus Windows 8 and Metro are a sensible idea from a real world point of view, rather than that of a rabid nerd on a desktop (a slowly dying form factor).

Which is another thing, windows RT is perfect for 80% of 'office type business use'.

By this I mean all they do is Outlook and Word, Excel maybe, but certainly no macros.

For them a full blown PC is not just overkill but a waste of money as it costs more to support, and a security risk.

Windows RT, it will be interesting as it gains market share to see how it manages with security. The idea of getting one for the receptionist just makes sense, she can't accidentally install anything dangerous.

You're talking as if 'one UI to rule them all' was the only thing Microsoft could have done to make their way into tablets and phones. That's what's pissed off 'rabid nerds on their slowly dying desktops', Microsoft is killing them.
