Re: News - Google Nexus 4 and Google Nexus 10 officially announced

£279, nice I'm off to pre-order. Glad I didn't get a Galaxy Nexus, I thought they were good at the <£300 price recently and expected the Nexus 4 to be well north of £400. I think the Galaxy was well over £500 at launch?

LTE, who cares I'll buy a new phone before the networks are anywhere near usable and at decent pricing. 16GB is just right for me, but the 8GB price is very good considering the rest of the specs.

I'm not liking this pricing trend. Google are playing a dangerous game here, and one that (in the long run) could see us with choices between first party hardware (i.e. Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft) only. Once the rumoured Kindle phone hits, things are only going to get worse...

    LG hardware = Excellent
    LG Software = Poo
    LG Nexus = Winning

Google sort the software side and LG provide the excellent hardware. On another note, CM10 will be out in a couple days for the O2x users here as the sources have landed and RC is in the final stages (he says at most a couple days left) woo.

but google use 3rd party OEMs to make the hardware, and the OEMs name is stamped on it. I think OEMs see this as an opportunity to prove themselves as capable of producing genuine good quality hardware and get an easier path to high publicity and advertising by letting google take care of it.

I see what you're saying in that they force Margins down for other companies possibly driving them out of the market but i dont think that will happen really.
Im just hoping that companies start to realize they dont need to put 'sense' or 'touchwiz' or any of the other crap on there. I would have thought that would make life easier for both themselves and the customers.

My Transformer Infinity makes me sad Compared to the Nexus 10, it has a crappy built in speaker, lower resolution, less battery life, I'd argue the Tegra 3 is a good processor to have since it owns at gaming but the only benefit to the Infinity is the keyboard dock (which is at least a good killer feature).

The Nexus 4 price is amazing for the spec. If I didn't hate those big phones I'd be all over it.

What can I say? This is amazing stuff, that smartphone at £279? I thought it would be £500+ as per the status-quo. Consider me converted - was looking for something to upgrade my Desire HD2 with Custom Rom. The old girl is showing her age! HSPA+ Nexus 7 too, great!

Hah, it has a dead pixels or something and I couldn't be assessed with the hassle of replacing it, which kinda ruins the ebay aspect of it, what makes it worse it was as some as driving up to tesco (got it for 180,bought the e8gb of Google but refused delivery and Still in the process of being refunded...)

Huzzah for student maintenance grant/loans, time to get the new Chromebook over christmas then the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 end of january Though I will have to sell my Galaxy Note 1, ah well, I've never had an entirely reliable ROM for it anyway and stability beats features

Of course if you're wanting to ditch your TF then I'm sure I could stump up a couple of quid to offer. After all a '201 would be a step up from the '101 that I've got (and like very much). But I'll agree with Biscuit - even though the Nexus 10 has better resolution, the Infinity is still a darned good device - and surely if you need more resolution then there's also the Infinity Prime (or whatever it's called now).

As to the Nexus 7, I think I'll be keeping an eye out for stock dumping of the 8GB when the new ones arrive. PC World are doing 64GB Playbooks for £120, so I'd hope that a Nexus would be a little bit cheaper than that.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

If it's good hardware then why object? Besides this stuff is all made by the usual OEMs so they're still pocketing cash and haven't had to work on the software builds they'd need for their entirely in-house handsets.

There are sacrifices here for those prices, be it basic style, lack of LTE, SD support etc and some of the Samsung or HTC software do add value like Samsung's S-Pen suite on the Note devices which along with the pen itself is a big selling point for some.

There will always be room for cheaper products, other sized products, other features etc. Google are playing a game but it's not dangerous, they are ensuring a good Android experience by driving solid hardware as an example.

Also there are vast swathes of the population who don't read the tech press and just wander into Argos/CPW/PCWorld and ask the assistant whats good, I'm willing to bet many people would just buy something more expensive on that basis.

Unfortunately not, Google are pushing their cloud services (even though they arent all available in the UK) so dont really want you using huge memory cards. A real shame as i think they would probably sell even more if they added in an SD slot of some form, however there wouldnt be much requirement to go for the higher capacity models if they had SD slots.
