Note 2 owner here..... :-)
Very happy with my device. Replaced my old HTC desire HD and I can't believe how much better this is.
And whats even better is that on 3G I can get down load speeds up to 15mb/sec quite often - no need for 4g for me.

Re: News - Samsung's Galaxy S3 sells over 30 million units in 157 days
Impressive numbers, I have a feeling due to the timing, with the 4S going out and people waiting for the 5, the last quarter iphone sales will outdo the 30 mil easily. Shame because I think there are better phones to be had.

Re: News - Samsung's Galaxy S3 sells over 30 million units in 157 days
Bought an S3 to replace my iPhone 4. Wouldn't say I'm disappointed with the S3, but I'm not as impressed as I was led to believe I would be.
I think my issue is more with Android than the handset. As a long-time iOS user, I'll say that Android is a million miles behind in terms of general polish and feel.

Samsung are probably making the best handsets for most people in general at the moment, a deserved number 1 spot. The N2 was too large for me (played with one) but I did like the features and ummed-ahhed over it. They've been quicker than the pack with Jelly Bean as well, wonder how long for 4.2?
It's not for many people (being vanilla Android it needs apps and setup time to get the most from) but the Nexus4 might well get my money, depends how well my Sensation does with latest CM10 based ROM. I'd been holding out for a 2GB RAM handset...

Re: News - Samsung's Galaxy S3 sells over 30 million units in 157 days
Went out for a meal to celebrate a childs birthday the other day, 11 adults, 6 Galaxy S 3's, 2 Galaxy Aces, one iPhone 4S in the smartphone stakes...I reckon that's a pretty convincing win for Samsung. The 4S owner said the wished they'd got an S 3 also as they found the apps they wanted and games especially expensive...

Shush you :p
I'm waiting for 4G units to come into stock (for resaleability and DC-HSPA support) which is probably not until the end of the month :(

S3 owner, and I'm going to agree with what's said above (although my old phone was a Sony-Ericson Xperia). The S3 isn't perfect by any means - camera's a bit iffy and I've had some "interesting" times with the GPS on the odd occasion, and a better screen (e.g. like the one on the HTC One's) wouldn't go amiss. On a recent family holiday to the US, I didn't bother taking a camera or getting a sat-nav - the S3 did the former acceptably and the latter function very well.

I don't understand what you're getting at here - are you saying that folks are going out and buying S3's merely as stop-gaps until the latest iPhone was available, and then ditching them? If so, then that's not something I've seen/heard of in practise (apart from anything else the launch of the '5 has been pretty easy to predict, so only a complete prat would buy a high end phone only to sell it < six months later).
I'm also curious about that "I think there are better phones to be had" comment also - are you speaking about the iPhones that you refer to, or the S3 that's the subject of the article? If you've got a phone that IS better than the S3 (in toto - e.g. I know that the screen on the HTC One X is better) then I'd like to share the secret, (don't nominate the iPhone5, because it just isn't better)

Re: News - Samsung's Galaxy S3 sells over 30 million units in 157 days
What I think is being said is that only about 3 weeks worth of iPhone 5 sales came in the recently reported quarter...so next quarter will have big numbers for iPhones as the 4S was a tad lukewarm to say the least :)

Nope and nope. I was talking about anyone in the market for an Iphone held off for the release of the 5 so their sales would be lower than usual during those months. The better phones to be had was referring to better phones than the Iphone 5 (**IMO), so you can chill ;) Even if I had meant iphone 5 is better it's all subjective anyway. Never take to heart what's said on forums, try things for yourself.

I would say that doesn't come as much as a surprise from somebody with the Android logo as their avatar...
Android (at least on my S3) seems to be riddled with bugs which just shouldn't exist on *any* modern mobile OS. Example: I plug in my headphones and turn up the ringer volume so that I can hear when a text message arrives. Sure, I hear the message tone through my headphones, but it'll also play through the loudspeaker - annoying. Shouldn't happen.
I've Googled it on plenty of occasions and found that it's a long-long standing bug which Google are "aware of and intend to address in the future".
I'm also repeatedly face-dialing whilst in calls. Apple had these problems in the past and got absolutely *lambasted* for it.
I could literally continue all day with stuff like this.

Yet to hear the example which proves that 'a million miles' isnt hyperbole?
Lets stack up those bugs in android against the ones in iOS shall we?
iOS maps ring any bells? I think its fair to say thats a fair way behind what Google offer. One might even go so far as to say 'a million miles'.
There has also been problems with secured Wifi access, weather reports on Siri and numerous other things.
My point isnt that android is awesome and ios is dog doo, just that trying to state that Android is a million miles away from a polished finish when iOS still has its areas that need drastic improvement is quite frankly, bollocks.

This is the exact upgrade path I'm on. My new Note 2 arrives in the next couple of days to replace an HTC Desire HD. Hope I'm as happy with the new phone as you are.

While I accept that Maps is technically part of iOS, I'm talking about fundamental, core issues with the OS at its heart - not gripes with individual apps and weather reports (which are entirely replaceable if desired).
I'm by no stretch an Apple fanboy (else I'd never have been so open-minded as to move to Android in the first place), but iOS as an operating system is a far smoother experience than Android is.
- My S3 arrived absolutely littered with 'System' apps (really? Flipboard needs to be a system app?). Perhaps this is Samsung wisdom rather than Google's.
- Scrolling around apps is a disappointingly choppy experience compared to iOS - especially for such a powerful handset.
- The sound system has major bugs (as I mentioned in my last post)
- An S3 specific gripe, but battery performance on a day to day basis is no better than the iPhone 4 - which isn't necessarily a problem, but I was promised so much more and all online advice suggests that I need to download third party apps to fix it (which I now have. God bless JuiceDefender). Still, I shouldn't need to use third party apps.

Samsung specific, however these apps can be hidden if they bother you that much, or at least they can on my HTC. Besides, i thought u weren't talking about supplied application? This is replaceable if desired.
I would say a friggin flipboard app is considerably less annoying than an entire maps application thats not worth squat.

I have seen iOS act pretty choppy aswell once there is a few things running in the background. Previously android has been a blot more choppy, but 4.1 Actually improves this a lot, alternative launchers can perform better than the default one aswell.
One thing people say to me when they see it go a bit choppy is... watch my iphone doesnt do that and im like... yeah but that's just a load of icons for apps, not widgets running actual programs. iPhones DO NOT have this feature and until they do you have to compare app draw to app draw which is in the most part, exactly the same.
I imagine widgets are a pretty difficult thing to get working smoothly which is why iOS doesnt have them yet. In my mind this puts apple behind android, significantly.

Major for you... if it was major for the masses it would have been fixed. Don't think i experience it and if i do, it doesn't bother me.

Smartphone specific gripe really, all of them could do with working on battery life although remember the screen is pretty big and pretty bright on the S3. Takes a fair amount of power to juice that up, apple dont have anything near that kind of screen size to drive. Dont really see the problem with using 3rd party apps to imporve your battery life, especially when (and feel free to correct me) the comparative solution doesn't exist in iPhone world.
I would also add inter-app integration into the mix, iOS doesnt do a very good job of this (outside stock apple apps) at all whilst android is decent-ish. Not great and i have found a few annoying things with it recently but its got a decent starting point.
Still waiting for the 'million miles away' example if im honest mate. Pretty even playing field where each take hits in different areas, personal usage determines which of these hits affects you most.

Don't mistake me as trying to present my own opinions as FACTS, I'm just saying that as a long term iOS user who was persuaded to try something different, the Android experience isn't all it was hyped up to be at all.
Do I regret swapping? No, I was genuinely bored of iPhones, but I maintain that I find Android to be a far less mature and less polished experience than iOS. Your mileage may vary.

Sage words which I'm going to agree with totally. In fact my "the iPhone5 isn't better than the S3" was intended to convey my opinion that while each of these devices has strengths over the other, all told they're probably as good as each other.

I'm going to reiterate something Biscuit says - get thee to JellyBean. The smoothness IS undoubted increased - butter smooth perhaps.
I've been lucky and managed to avoid all of the issues you state - no, in my case my pet hate is the battery raper that is Google Now, the vampire-like (doesn't like sunlight!) screen and the camera (but then again I've been spoiled - my old SE X10 had a superb camera, especially outdoors).
I'm interested to hear what the issue with Flipbook is - granted Samsung fills the S3 with a lot of crap (which the teleco's add to - hence why I got a SIM free) but it's only an app, so dead easy to just ignore. I've got my S3 rooted for Titanium Backup (rooted with chainfire's "simple" method) and TB allows me to zap any damned app I take a disliking to.
Funnily enough one thing that I did dislike about the S3 was all the pre-launch hype. If you believed half of the "confirmed rumours" then the resulting device bears only a passing resemblance to what was eventually delivered. I'd love to see Samsung USA do a comedic ad set for the S3 akin to the one for the Note that cumulated with the "I believe ..." ad that was shown in the Superbowl.
-
Both are very different, I've used both many times, personally I prefer iOS at the moment but I do find myself saying "on android you can do this" or "I prefer android for this" but then I'd say the same vice versa. Neither is perfect and both set out to although achieve the same goal, they get there following different paths which is why I hate all the 'fanboyness' that plagues both os's
For me, it's about pulling my phone out and having it do something in one or two taps smoothly and look good doing it, android is almost there, just not quite. I'm sure a new android device will have me throwing my iphone at a potential buyer in the future and going back and again, vice versa :)
I feel almost blessed that I'm fluent with both lol :D

When people say to me, 'what phone should i get?' (which happens a lot) if its an iPhone user i tend to say, get another iPhone.
In most cases i know that once they got used to it and learned the right apps to substitute what they are used too, android would be a more cost effective, and perhaps more efficient solution. The problem is that its just not worth the effort (for them or me as the un-appointed support dude) in the long run for the less technological adventurous members of the public.
My original comment was that saying android is a million miles behind WRG to polish is untrue, so far im yet to see anyone come up with any real evidence that this is the case, other than comments about very vague or unfair comparisons of the OSes.
Feel free to hold your opinion, but be prepared for it to be challenged, especially on this forum...

As on any forum, I encourage opinions to be challenged. Respectfully, you haven't really challenged my opinion.. rather you've written it off as not bothering the vast majority of people there therefore probably not a big problem. As a professional software developer myself, this troubles me - especially where bugs are concerned (and I can assure you, there are pages and pages and pages of forum posts concerning the headphones bug). Clearly it's troubling enough people.
Regardless, this is where I'll make my exit. I'm sure we could continue like this all month but, with all due respect, I was wary of wading into this from the moment I noticed your avatar ;)
I'm more than sure my S3 will give me many years of happy use, as my iPhone did, and handsets prior to those.

Your opinion that i disagreed with was that android is its a million miles behind in polish and finish, which i have provided plenty of evidence to support. The bug regarding the headphone issue was part of your evidence to support your opinion and i disregarded it because i have never heard about it before and it really doesn't sound all that major, just pretty annoying.
Even when i google it there are not the kind of hits you would expect for a, 'Major Bug'. From what i can find this was introduced in ICS (so is not long-long standing) and i cant find anything about it in jellybean, so it may well have been fixed now?
Regardless, If this is your only evidence which doesn't have a clear rebuttal, i think you have proved my point that saying android is 'a million miles away' is hyperbole.
On the flip side, if i google iOS secured wifi bug.... hmmmm, WIFI i would put as a pretty major bug!
It troubles me that in a reasonable argument, serious iOS issues are skimmed over repeatedly yet the same is not allowed to be done for android issues.
More is and should be expected of apple because they products are priced and advertised as the best.

Yes you made it clear that you had stamped me with a stereotype before you thought about what i had actually said, but its a fun picture!
Not sure we could argue about it all month because there is very little to argue. Besides, i have very careful to not deliberately mac-bash unnecessarily, i have put reasoned and fair points forward and repeatedly requested the same in return.

Quite true - I've often asked iFans (note - as opposed to people who happen to have an iPhone) for examples of where their magical mobile is better than my S3, and I usually get:
- An example of one or two apps that either don't exist on Android or are notably more "immature"
- The statement that "you've got to know about rooting and Linux and s**t" (no!)
- It just is - after all all phones are poor copies of the iPhone (no!)
Personally I think the "debate" is a bit redundant these days - Android's got some faults, but so has iOS - so in reality they're probably equally as good (or bad) as the other. If I was in the market for something like a Nexus phone or an HTC One X then I can't see any real objection to putting an iPhone5 on the list as a possibility.
On the other hand, I put a premium on the uSD slot and removable battery of my S3, which is why I've not considered an iPhone, HOX, etc.

Seriously? :o I am surprised - I've not owned a Mac, but brief hands on have left me generally impressed. And of course OS X is basically Unix with a fancy GUI, which wins points from me from the get-go. The Mac Mini, on the other hand, doesn't appeal that much, apart from as a way of getting OS X without a second mortgage - the MM strikes me as something that I could duplicate cheaper with a suitable collection of MiniITX type parts.

For me the shine wore off quite quickly. I had to get sooooo many bits replaced because it repeatedly broke. I went through 5 DVD drives and then eventually when i sold it... it didnt work. I sold t to a mate without a working DVD drive or a hard drive and he managed to get it going with an SSD though, as far as i know its still running. To be fair it should be, its an entire new laptop from when it was new.
The friggin magsafe power supplies aswell, went through crap loads of them. Terrible design!
The fact that OSX is basically BSD ( ;) )with a fancy gui is what made it kinda annoying for me. Felt like a messy install as soon as you had switched it on and done a bit of exploring. There are some things you can do on there which i miss and have been tempted to build a hackingtosh to get back at it!
The build quality is pretty average and once you have torn it down you see that there is corners cut and compromises made, especially with the newer ones that are basically impossible to service yourself.
I dont even know if they still use the fancy IPS screens that they used to use, i know there was a spell of people complaining about how bad TN panels were that they were using but im not sure if they have gone back to the better days.

What on earth did you do to it to go through 5 DVD drives? I struggle to kill DVD drives these days in anything, even the relatively fragile slot-loader in my oldest MBP - which I disassembled and reassembled a fair few times to change the hard disk.

This one I'll give you - I had this issue with the older straight magsafe connector. The right angle connector with more modern Macs I've not managed to damage yet, and the magsafe 2 connector with the latest seems ok so far.

Build quality was a definite issue in the older MBPs, it's got a lot better with the unibody designs. My current MBP (retina 15") has an IPS panel, but my older two (one was a 2007 model that got stolen, one was a 2010 model that got sold on ebay) both had TN. The TN screens were not the worst laptop screens I've seen by a long distance, but not the best either. I have no complaints about the new retina MBP's screen.
