    Note 2 owner here..... :-)
Very happy with my device. Replaced my old HTC desire HD and I can't believe how much better this is.
And whats even better is that on 3G I can get down load speeds up to 15mb/sec quite often - no need for 4g for me.

Impressive numbers, I have a feeling due to the timing, with the 4S going out and people waiting for the 5, the last quarter iphone sales will outdo the 30 mil easily. Shame because I think there are better phones to be had.

Bought an S3 to replace my iPhone 4. Wouldn't say I'm disappointed with the S3, but I'm not as impressed as I was led to believe I would be.

I think my issue is more with Android than the handset. As a long-time iOS user, I'll say that Android is a million miles behind in terms of general polish and feel.

Samsung are probably making the best handsets for most people in general at the moment, a deserved number 1 spot. The N2 was too large for me (played with one) but I did like the features and ummed-ahhed over it. They've been quicker than the pack with Jelly Bean as well, wonder how long for 4.2?

It's not for many people (being vanilla Android it needs apps and setup time to get the most from) but the Nexus4 might well get my money, depends how well my Sensation does with latest CM10 based ROM. I'd been holding out for a 2GB RAM handset...

Went out for a meal to celebrate a childs birthday the other day, 11 adults, 6 Galaxy S 3's, 2 Galaxy Aces, one iPhone 4S in the smartphone stakes...I reckon that's a pretty convincing win for Samsung. The 4S owner said the wished they'd got an S 3 also as they found the apps they wanted and games especially expensive...

    Shush you
I'm waiting for 4G units to come into stock (for resaleability and DC-HSPA support) which is probably not until the end of the month

S3 owner, and I'm going to agree with what's said above (although my old phone was a Sony-Ericson Xperia). The S3 isn't perfect by any means - camera's a bit iffy and I've had some "interesting" times with the GPS on the odd occasion, and a better screen (e.g. like the one on the HTC One's) wouldn't go amiss. On a recent family holiday to the US, I didn't bother taking a camera or getting a sat-nav - the S3 did the former acceptably and the latter function very well.

I don't understand what you're getting at here - are you saying that folks are going out and buying S3's merely as stop-gaps until the latest iPhone was available, and then ditching them? If so, then that's not something I've seen/heard of in practise (apart from anything else the launch of the '5 has been pretty easy to predict, so only a complete prat would buy a high end phone only to sell it < six months later).
I'm also curious about that "I think there are better phones to be had" comment also - are you speaking about the iPhones that you refer to, or the S3 that's the subject of the article? If you've got a phone that IS better than the S3 (in toto - e.g. I know that the screen on the HTC One X is better) then I'd like to share the secret, (don't nominate the iPhone5, because it just isn't better)

What I think is being said is that only about 3 weeks worth of iPhone 5 sales came in the recently reported quarter...so next quarter will have big numbers for iPhones as the 4S was a tad lukewarm to say the least

Nope and nope. I was talking about anyone in the market for an Iphone held off for the release of the 5 so their sales would be lower than usual during those months. The better phones to be had was referring to better phones than the Iphone 5 (**IMO), so you can chill Even if I had meant iphone 5 is better it's all subjective anyway. Never take to heart what's said on forums, try things for yourself.

I would say that doesn't come as much as a surprise from somebody with the Android logo as their avatar...

Android (at least on my S3) seems to be riddled with bugs which just shouldn't exist on *any* modern mobile OS. Example: I plug in my headphones and turn up the ringer volume so that I can hear when a text message arrives. Sure, I hear the message tone through my headphones, but it'll also play through the loudspeaker - annoying. Shouldn't happen.

I've Googled it on plenty of occasions and found that it's a long-long standing bug which Google are "aware of and intend to address in the future".

I'm also repeatedly face-dialing whilst in calls. Apple had these problems in the past and got absolutely *lambasted* for it.

I could literally continue all day with stuff like this.

Yet to hear the example which proves that 'a million miles' isnt hyperbole?

Lets stack up those bugs in android against the ones in iOS shall we?
iOS maps ring any bells? I think its fair to say thats a fair way behind what Google offer. One might even go so far as to say 'a million miles'.

There has also been problems with secured Wifi access, weather reports on Siri and numerous other things.

My point isnt that android is awesome and ios is dog doo, just that trying to state that Android is a million miles away from a polished finish when iOS still has its areas that need drastic improvement is quite frankly, bollocks.

This is the exact upgrade path I'm on. My new Note 2 arrives in the next couple of days to replace an HTC Desire HD. Hope I'm as happy with the new phone as you are.

While I accept that Maps is technically part of iOS, I'm talking about fundamental, core issues with the OS at its heart - not gripes with individual apps and weather reports (which are entirely replaceable if desired).

I'm by no stretch an Apple fanboy (else I'd never have been so open-minded as to move to Android in the first place), but iOS as an operating system is a far smoother experience than Android is.

    - My S3 arrived absolutely littered with 'System' apps (really? Flipboard needs to be a system app?). Perhaps this is Samsung wisdom rather than Google's.
    - Scrolling around apps is a disappointingly choppy experience compared to iOS - especially for such a powerful handset.
    - The sound system has major bugs (as I mentioned in my last post)
    - An S3 specific gripe, but battery performance on a day to day basis is no better than the iPhone 4 - which isn't necessarily a problem, but I was promised so much more and all online advice suggests that I need to download third party apps to fix it (which I now have. God bless JuiceDefender). Still, I shouldn't need to use third party apps.
