Yeah good luck with that.
Re: News - HP declares aim to be a leader in tablets and smartphones
Whilst Palm wasn't a leader per say, they did kill whatever it was they had.
The HP board just need to kiss and make up imsho.

But wait... it has Beats audio so it must sell lots.

Indeed they weren't a leader but their products where actually quite good. Many features on their handsets took a long time to appear in and on handsets that are common now. I think they just seemed to lack the marketing ability to really get them out there and HP didn't really seem to put their back into it.
Totally agree with the comment about the HP board, if they want to stand any chance they need to get that expertise back!
Re: News - HP declares aim to be a leader in tablets and smartphones
It'll be interesting to see whether HP can compete as "just another Android company" - remember, Nokia decided against that route for fear that they'd be unable to compete on anything but price. Let's see if Nokia were right.
Of course, the elephant in the room is that HP *had* a unique and loved smartphone/tablet OS, and they ****ed it. I really don't expect them to make a splash with Android.
Re: News - HP declares aim to be a leader in tablets and smartphones
Not a very realistic aim I must say
Re: News - HP declares aim to be a leader in tablets and smartphones
If Microsoft can't gain much market traction with a unique OS, good quality hardware and massive advertisement push I can't see what HP are going to do. You look at their laptops in the shows and they have a "my first laptop" styling about them - all rounded corners and shiny plastic. Urgh.
Re: News - HP declares aim to be a leader in tablets and smartphones
The more, the merrier I say.
HP are a box pusher, hopefully their participation and eagerness to sell large quantities will drive down prices and bring up the specifications of branded entry level devices.
One good thing I can say about HP is that they tend to release software updates for their products, which is very important with things like tablet computers. I am still waiting for a ROM update for my Archos Cobalt, to fix all the bugs.
Re: News - HP declares aim to be a leader in tablets and smartphones
HP are such an incredibly uninspiring company. I think the only thing I've bought from the in the last 10 years is a printer. Admittedly, it's very good, but then it's one of the few things that HP seems to genuinely be in the race for.

If you're talking about the Surface/Surface Pro then - at least from comments here - Microsoft made some mistakes (Surface horribly overpriced, Pro suffering from lack of storage). Windows Phone seems to be doing good business now - but then again maybe that's because people have finally got the idea that it's not going to stagnate like previous Microsoft phone efforts have. Nokia are doing a good enough job that even I - a big Android fan - would seriously consider switching.
As to the "my first laptop" crack - you've got to be talking about the Compaq branded and "Pavilion" stuff. To me that's like saying that Asda "Smart Price" stuff isn't anything special ... it isn't because it's designed to be piled up high and sold cheap. Likewise the Compaq/Pavilion's. Although that said, I bought a Pav desktop this week for the youngest kid and it's actually quite a nice looking system.
On the other hand, there's the Envy's and Spectre's which I'll argue strongly are very handsome looking - e.g. the Envy dv7 that got bought in Christmas is a good looking slab. Similarly, the ProBook 6470b I got as a work's unit - it's got a kind of "Soviet style" solidity about it - wouldn't call it "pretty", more "functional".
Personally speaking I can see the point of doing tablets - as I've said before we've yet to see someone really do a tablet range that's suited to business use. Interestingly enough I got a mail from Samsung yesterday about their new business friendly setups, so there's obviously a market there.
But HP doing smartphones ... Meg, seriously? Are you out of your effin' mind! Why do you think that economics classes use mobile phones as an example of a market nearing saturation. :wallbash:
(Yes, HP pay my salary, but opinions are my own)

I don't see what's "business use" about what is essentially a Nexus 7 with a red back and a Beats Audio logo

I'd agree, if not for the market interest around Firefox OS.
I certainly think the market for Android smartphones is saturated, with Samsung as the only company which matters
Re: News - HP declares aim to be a leader in tablets and smartphones
So from being "up with the pack" with WebOS, they are now an "also ran" in beige tablets.
The HP Board must be using Apple's mapping apps to have lost their way so badly.

Correction: their tablet uses the second worst SoC on the market, the Rockchip RK3066.
This isn't a Nexus 7 competitor, it's an expensive version of the £50 Chinese tablets they sell at Maplin.

Um, I didn't say the Slate 7 was a "business use" device - actually I suspect it's a "toe in the water". Instead what I'd said was that I can see the point of HP getting into tablets - for business use because that's where the money is. I'd take a lot of convincing that an iPad is suitable for business use - especially as most of the ones I see are in the hands of design or marketing folks. So something that used a tailored version of Android with all those controls that Windows admins tell me are "absolutely necessary" (and I don't have enough knowledge to argue) in the corporate space would be a good product.

"Market interest around Firefox OS" - I must have missed that one article then. ALL the articles I've see about Firefox OS have more or less come to the conclusion that it's technically interesting but a total irrelevance against the quartet of Android, Blackberry, iOS and Windows Phone.
Personally speaking I loathe it because the official reason they dropped development on the Thunderbird mail client (which IS needed), was to move those folks onto FirefoxOS (which is a dead end as far as I'm concerned).

Going to disagree since Samsung aren't innovators (my phone and latest tablet are Samsung). What they do well though is copy other people and make it cheaper. On the other hand Apple copy people and sell it more expensive!
Samsung are the largest in the Android market, but I remember a time when HTC had that exalted position, so what's to say that someone like Asus, Sony, Motorola - or even HTC - might not assume that position two or three years down the line? That's one of the reasons that iOS fails to interest me - there it's only one companies view of "how it should be" whereas with Android (and now Windows Phone) we have design teams competing.
So I'd like to see HP enter the tablet market "hard" - Asus and Samsung need to be kept "on their toes" and while HP might not be the one to do it, the prospect that they will is desirable. I don't see the smartphone market though being a good fit. Yes, there were the various Palm-based devices but that was a long time ago...
Like everything in HP it's down to the board - if they keep to the "good designs for a discerning customer" brief then we could see some good products. On the other hand, if they do the usual and get bored and move on after two years then they're (rightly?) doomed to fail big time.
Although as one of my colleagues said, the silver lining of a "fail" is that there'll be another one of those firesales. ;)
