Re: Features - QOTW: What's the most expensive component in your PC?

My most expensive part on my system is currently the CPU, then next are a couple of Radeon HD6950s,then it would probably be the pair of ssd's, then the MB, the cooling, the PSU, and the case, then the HDs, and finally the optical drives,

My HD6990 would def be my most expensive part.
I would say it was worth it.

Re: Features - QOTW: What's the most expensive component in your PC?

My build is fairly balanced actually so component wise it would be the SSD that's the most expensive. However, my monitor cost more than the SSD but it's definitely worth it. I won't say that I can't go back to 1080p because I can manage, but having all the screen estate of a 27" 2560x1440 pixel panel is just perfect - any higher PPI and I'd have to scale up the DPI or things would be tiny, any larger of a screen and it most likely won't fit my field of vision anyway.

Just to break down costs of the most expensive parts in my build:

    Monitor: Crossover 27Q - £240
    SSD: Samsung 830 256GB - £125
    GPU: MSI HD7850 1GB OC - £100
    CPU: i5-3330S - £90

As you can see, it's pretty balanced and close indeed. Whilst I can't notice the Samsung being that much faster than the past SSD drives I've owned, it's been reliable and I've not had any problems since I've owned it. Being 7mm thick and looking nice with a brushed aluminium cover is a bonus too.

The HD7850 has been perfect for my needs as I don't play the latest games. Played some D3, LoL and MMORPGs so it's more than enough power for those and it's very efficient on the power draw which is brilliant as I can run it on a good 250W PSU.

The i5-3330S is probably the least worthy component as I had an i3-2100 before upgrading and honestly I've not noticed much improvement in anything but having 4 physical cores is equal to or better than having 2 physical and 4 virtual cores anyway - I may need them someday. In terms of power consumption and heat, they're both really similar which isn't too surprising as they're both 65W parts.

It's my graphics card. GPU price = CPU + MB price.

Definatly my water cooled 6990 followed up by my 240g gig vertex 3 ssd but if taken as a whole my custom water cooling setup would be the most expensive overall. All definatly worth it to me.

CPU first then motherboard then graphics card then SSD would like a new graphics card but have to wait to get the money.

You were possibly a little early coming in on an GTX ?80 model card. I wouldn't worry about that, though - I bet you'll see the difference by Christmas 2014. It's the games that need to change now, and once they're playing towards the strengths of PS4/XBO, we'll see big improvements in the DX11 PC versions to match.

Re: Features - QOTW: What's the most expensive component in your PC?

In my current rig, strangely, all the components were about the same price (circa £100) but the GFX card was the most expensive by a small margin.

Also, I agree with Simon Preston that the SSD is the one component that really made me feel I had invested in a serious value component... it just makes such a difference... to everything!

For me, the GFX card was the item I feel gave me poorest value for money, they are just overpriced as a separate solution (IMHO).

Re: Features - QOTW: What's the most expensive component in your PC?

Monitor: 27" 1440p DGM. I've never regretted upgrading my monitor, and this thing cost half as much as my first 17" CRT, over 15 years ago. I'd buy another tomorrow if this died, without thinking twice. A surprising number of games run happily at native res, even with a relatively old (but hardly slow!) 5870, and it scales very well to 1080p if I need to.

There's no such thing as too much desktop... except when my undisciplined shortcut sprawl gets out of hand. :-)

HD6990 at £550. Was it worth it? Mostly yes, it has had issues with a few games and my next graphics card will be a high end single GPU solution as I now want a simple answer to driving the graphics in my games.
