I'd like to see them defend their position in court though. I'm fairly confident that you could argue you own the license to play the game.

Thanks, PeteBest. Sadly it's not too rare to see something reported which isn't true. Often these reports balloon as readers get outraged by them.
On the subject of ownership, frankly I'm not sure if for long term ownership physical or digital is better. I've certainly lost a lot of physical items (including copies of DRM-free digital content) and digital stores with "perpetual" downloads (as long as they're alive) make thing harder to lose. On the other hand when you do lose something digital you can blame someone else, which fuels your anger.
