Personally, no chance!
If nothing else, neither of them would fit in my case... Then add in the price, the fact that they'd be total overkill for my 1050p monitor and the fact that I virtually never get to play games these days anyway and.... it's a pretty solid 'no'.
Will be interested when the lower-end Maxwell cards come along as I'd quite like something to replace my 660ti and give me the same performance (or small upgrade) but for much lower heat/power/noise.

I'm in the same boat as you with X58 Express and I'm getting a new SSD at Christmas (250GB Samsung 840 EVO) that would be really held back by SATA 2. What I'm planning though is picking up a PCI-E SATA 3 adapter and connecting it to that. Something like:

I think I'll be able to find them a bit cheaper on Amazon or whatever and provided my mobo will be happy to boot from it, could be a pretty solid solution. Maybe an option to bear in mind while you wait for Skylake (agreed that Haswell isn't worth the upgrade vs Nehalem i7 and Broadwell is very unlikely to be a major performance improvement).
I'm also coming from a GTX 670 (EVGA FTW Edition) and looking at selling it and picking up the Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming. Not sure what I should expect to get for the GTX 670 but I'm trying for £140 and already got one response (albeit some prannock offering £80 cash). What would you consider a decent price for it? I figure the upgrade is worth easily £150, so selling at £110-160 would do the job, depending on which GTX 970 you're looking at.
To be honest the lower power usage, heat and noise of the 970 really appeals over my 7970.
According to Skinflint the 970 is drawing most interest, at least those using the site. Maybe its just me
As good as it is, (and this would be my first nVidia card in 17 years of PC ownership), as an existing R9-290X OC Tri-X owner there isn't a big enough step up for me. I probably will, however, invest in 'Big Maxwell' GM210 (Titan 2? 990?) whenever that is out....
Absolutely, if I can afford it. I would love to have a 970 4Gb.
Upgrading to a 970 from my 660 2Gb would be a substantial boost.
We'll just have to see how un-poor I can become in the weeks and
months to come. Unfortunately, my disposable income is rather a
bit indisposable at the moment...
Upgrading from a Sapphire Radeon 7870 OC to an MSI GTX 970. Think it's about time.

If I hadn't picked up a 780Ti for a breeze recently, I might of purchased a 980 for the main rig or a 970 for the HTPC/2nd gaming rig.
In fact, part of me is saying that the smart move would be to try and trade the 780 for a 970 in the HTPC......hmmm

Will probably go for an OC 970, as it looks to be a marked improvement over the 770 OC I've got at the moment, without costing the earth. I only game in 1080P so the 980 looks like overkill ^_^
After reading up on the 970, I think I've changed my mind. Quite a lot of room for overclocking and 3 or 4 way SLI won't be an absolute fortune, plus the money I save compared to 980s can go towards watercooling
Still going to wait a little longer though, I'm waiting for news of an EU release of the EVGA FTW edition
I can dream... I can hope... but I know that I will eventually get it when it's at a cheaper price.
Its only 10W to 20W difference for an HD7970GE:

The GTX970 draws more than an HD7950 and is probably not any lower than a normal HD7970 non-GE in power consumption and heat production. The GTX970 is meant to have a similar TDP to my GTX660 and lower than a GTX670 - look at the chart again.
Was weak and ordered the MSI GTX 970 from Scan. Would have preferred the Asus, but 970s are getting thin on the ground.
I think the MSI is actually the better card. Bit-tech thought so too:
