The trouble with retailer figures is some HDD manufacturers have much more robust RMA systems than others. In some cases it's easier to RMA to the store but in others back to the manufacturer; that also depends on the manufacturer's policy. So it's very hard to get meaningful figures that way.

Re: Latest consumer hard drive reliability report is published

There are a number of things wrong with this comparison,

Firstly the drives are all different ages:
The segate barracuda 1.5TB drives that were included in this have been in use for 4-5 years (on average) so will naturally have a higher annual failure rate.
By comparison all the western digital drives had only been in use for 1 - 10 months (on average).

Secondly some enterpise drives were used and compared to standard desktop drives from other manufactures:
HGST Megascale Enterprise drives were used (£250 - £300 for 4tb drive) and compared to standard offerings from seagate and WD.

Also of note is all the other non enterprise HGST drives included in this are not manufactured any more. It would be great if some modern HGST drives were included (especially drives made after their acquisition).

The 3TB seagate ST3000DM001 drives do look like bad eggs with over 40% failing after 2-3 years at data center workload. Some of these drives were pulled from retail external usb enclosures as mentioned in the Hexus article which could have caused some issues.

Western Digital Green 3TB drives and Seagate LP (low power) 2TB drives were excluded from the results as they both started generating errors as soon as they were put in the data center (likely due to vibrations)

The hardware.fr reliability report makes interesting reading for those who are interested in this topic. This takes into account consumer returns as a percentage of total sales. The spam filter prevents me from posting the link but you can access it by searching google for 'hardware.fr Les taux de retour des composants (11)' - you'll need to use google translate or chrome to read the report (unless you're fluent in French!), the stuff about hard drives is on page 6 of the report.

In short it shows that Seagate drives are the most reliable of them all and Toshiba/HGST the least reliable.

I am running 3x2TB Seagates in my PC and use a 3TB external seagate hard drive for backing up the important stuff.

Am I worried? not in the slightest.

I'm not touching Seagate again, had two 3TB 7200.11 drives die on me about 14 months into their life's.

I would be. I used to look after storage in my last job and not many 1.5TB+ Seagates made it to 2 years.
Had to start moving everything to WD as we could not trust the seagates to survive.

I'm worried as most of the storage in my HTPC is Seagate and around 2 years old....

These were the consumer grade drives and not stuff like the constellations.

Re: Latest consumer hard drive reliability report is published

I think this data is legit. In my own personal use of hard drives i've only had 3 drives fail on me in 24 years of having a pc. All 3 of those drives were seagates. I currently am using 2GB Western digital black drives and 4GB HGST drives and it's nothing but smooth sailing.

later found out they entirely lacked acoustic management for no discernible reason.

I think i've had a 100+%* failure rate for seagate drives and ~33% for others over their lifetimes.

*(having a drive fail, then it's warrenty replacement fail twice over is fun)
omg same thing happened to me. Drive fails replacement fails replacement to replacement fails i give up and quit paying shipping and buy a western digital and no problems since.

Re: Latest consumer hard drive reliability report is published

There are too many variables to make the results "scientific".
They should include the average life of those that failed and the average life of those still running. I think that would give some context to the numbers. I also assume the hardware, environmental conditions and workload can vary across the datacentre so it's not really "all else being equal" and very unfair to some. The vibrations can vary between array HW and combination of drives so reader beware.
