I was using Avast for over 6 years but then i saw Bitdefender and never looked back. Free edition is absolutely flawless, plus FULL score on AVtest in every aspect.

I use Avast, but on Mac it's causing issues with youtube videos loading (well, they won't) and on windows 10, it breaks the start menu.

Microsoft's Security Essentials combined with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has done very well for me. I use Sandboxie for browsing non standard sites and VMWare Workstation which is a must if you like playing with the bad stuff.
Bitdefender looks like a great product but it is not compatible with Sandboxie.

Problem is when I do research as to which security software is best different sites all say different things. Kaspersky always seems to score highly though so I tend to use that. I would use free software but they always tend to have average scores. By scores I mean how many threats they actually detect in test runs.
Eset
I just use windows defender. However, I'm dubious it actually does anything as it never finds anything wrong with my PC, should I be worried?
Bitdefender Free on all my machines.
You don't even notice it's there - only if it intercepts something.
There are no ads, it updates itself in the background, and won't even run an autoscan if the machine is in use.
ESET NOD32 4-pack for the family PCs. Not caught anything nasty yet *touch wood*.
ESET for the last 8 years
I'm using Avast. Read an article somewhere, in which they compared how different AV solutions impact system performance. Avast was one of those with the lowest impact. It does pop up some ads (just for a paid subscription, not some 3rd party crap) with the default config, but when you switch it to gaming mode it stays nice and quiet in its corner, doing whatever it does.
AVG and Avast, still using.
I use Comodo Internet Security Premium, its awesome but sometimes it has trouble with allowing me to open programs, it recently had a conflict with Chrome.
Microsoft security essentials and more importantly a brain.
I switched to Avira after the article about how the scanners can tie up resources. Avira did very well in the test.
