This, machine has been going for 3 years without a single blip. Though I suggested the same to a colleague and his laptop got multiple viruses and their email got hacked within a week of buying it, which is now my fault obviously. So it has McAfee now and he seems happy with the vague notifications that it might have stopped someone from doing something at some point. I think common sense is the winner here.

Just moved from AVG to Avira because of AVGs shenanigans, Avira seems ok so far

haha, yes given the vast amounts of porn I download... haha but fair enough, I think windows defender would inspire a bit more confidence though if it did actually find something once in a while, but I guess it must be doing a good job

Used to have Eset nod32 for years then they started a Nag Screen about a month before the sub was up so switched to Bitdefender .... All good actually think its better than nod32

Avira (free version) - it always seems to do well in the comparison tests.

It was Kaspersky until a few years ago when it started to bloat. Since then it's been BitDefender. I've always used MalwareBytes AntiMalware and SuperAntiSpyware along with any I.S./A.V. product.

Re: QOTW: Which anti-virus do you use, if any?

Been using Comodo and MBAM for over a year now. Quite happy and find Comodo quick and easy to configure. Tried most of the free ones at some time or other. Used AVG for a while but got a lot of false positives. Moved to Windows Defender and found it easy to use on a basic level but not particularly flexible. I don't recall exactly what caused me to move from Defender to Comodo - I think it might have been the need to block a specific application, but can't be sure.

Re: QOTW: Which anti-virus do you use, if any?

EMET 5.2 with various rules. Most stuff which connects out are included in the rules list, as well as some other things which could interact with stuff which could be sourced from elsewhere.

Malwarebytes Premium with web protection sometimes turned off if that gets annoying (I just noticed that I turned MBAM completely off a month ago & forgot to turn it back on)

Firefox with Adblock, RefControl (some web malware only activates when people come from Google etc), Ghostery and NoScript with some additional options enabled beyond the default. I rarely need to enable Flash and might even uninstall it soon.

I keep my apps & plugins up-to-date quite very regularly. However, I run Windows Update less frequently than I should.

I have some Win7's Software Restriction policies enabled, limiting where I can run things from. My download folders are obviously not allowed.

I had one near-hit a few years ago when I was clicking rapidly through an unusual folder structure and accidentally double-clicked a malicious file. Malwarebytes saved me in that case, and that's when I added the software restriction policies.

If I ever need to do anything even slightly raises the risk profile, it gets done in a disposable VM. In the past I've even inspected known-infected hard drives using an airgapped wipeable PC.

Re: QOTW: Which anti-virus do you use, if any?

Used Avast for ages but got sick of the feature creep and bloat. Now on Bitdefender Free which seems fine, along with the odd scan with MBAM or SuperAntiSpyware. VirusTotal is good for scanning small files too. Don't remember the last time I had a problem *touches wood*.

As with most computer problems, I find the primary cause tends to be the user... half a dozen toolbars installed plus associated malware, drive by infections when trying to watch the footy for free etc.

Was with trend micro, note for the last couple of years with bullguard. Find them ok to be honest and don't feel it much in the background.
