The sad thing that I took away from this (I read the original article a week ago) is that 16:10 apparently truly is stonedead. Which is a shame as this aspect ratio in my opinion is superior to 16:9. I'm sure to be in the minority, though, since 21:9 seems to have taken off quite spectacularly in the monitor area (not so much for tvs).

This is ridiculous. I guess none of these monitor makers have tried browsing the web on these things. I want TALLER, not WIDER. Raise your hand if you want to scroll all day on the web...I see no hands. Don't get me wrong, I'd love this type of crap at work on excel sheets all day, but they are seemingly acting as if that is what most of us do at home too. Odd. I like my games TALLER also. Bring back 16:10 massively please. Wider is for movies and excel and that's about it for me (maybe my car if I'm trying to do corners at 90mph?...ROFL).

In my office I have a 16:10 second hand dell 22" (£30 on eBay) that's rotated 90° and its awesome for webpages. Give that a try

This, frankly. With a 1080p screen it'll just about work (it's amazing how many websites still cope well with a minimum 1024px screen width), 1200+ and you're golden (even on a 9" tablet ).

Next I expect frenzied discussion on what sort of GPU will be needed to drive an 8k display . ( Ok I admit I am tempted to have a go on an upgrade albeit I went though all sorts of pain with my first 4K build)

Well depending on the format you would be looking at between 33 and 42 mega pixels. Assuming playble frame rates are between 30 and 60 FPS, a chuffing fast one.

Depending on the size of the screen I would question if the human eye could tell the difference after 15-20mp.
